Vector-borne diseases pose a serious threat to our health, transmitted to humans through pesky vectors like mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and rodents. These illnesses not only lead to substantial health issues but can also result in death. With numerous vectors in California harboring dangerous pathogens, it’s crucial to stay informed and proactive in safeguarding our well-being.

Empower yourself by using insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and steering clear of areas where ticks and rodents thrive.

Vaughn Borremeo's story is one of many. Yesterday, on HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day, we honored the strength, resilience, and legacy of those aging with HIV.

📅 June 5 serves as a powerful reminder: HIV isn’t just a diagnosis—it’s a lifelong story of community, progress, and persistence.

Mosquitoes can transmit diseases like West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis. Although most residents that contract these diseases will show no serious symptoms, a small portion of people can experience serious health complications. Preventing mosquitoes from breeding and avoiding mosquito bites are the best ways to avoid getting these diseases.

Today we joined Kern Mosquito and Vector Control District and other local mosquito control districts in a press conference and open house on mosquito awareness and prevention. Learn about diseases such as West Nile virus, ways to protect you and your family, as well as methods used to control the mosquito population in Kern County, visit kernpublichealth.com

Vector-borne diseases are serious health threats transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and contact with rodents.

These small but mighty carriers, known as vectors, harbor dangerous viruses, bacteria, and parasites capable of making us ill. Some of the most notorious include:
• West Nile Virus
• Lyme Disease
• Hantavirus
• Plague
• St. Louis Encephalitis

You might think you’re safe at home, but these vectors can thrive in urban settings, rural landscapes, and even your own backyard!

Protect yourself and your loved ones:
• Apply insect repellent
• Don long sleeves when outdoors
• Eliminate standing water
• Secure your home against rodents

Taking the time to understand vectors is your first line of defense against disease. Stay informed, stay safe!
