Gratitude post 🙏🏽Thank you to Kern Family Health Care for the generous community grant, which has enabled us to develop our Health Literacy Toolkit. Our team of Community Health Workers is looking forward to continuing our health education, advocacy, and health navigation services in the community.

As part of her Masters in Public Health program, our Community Program Coordinator Sandra Hernandez interviewed Executive Director Danielle Colayco on how the Foundation promotes health equity in the Central Valley. Key topics included how we prioritize our public health goals, how we measure success, what's working and not working, how we support development of our leaders, systemic factors we have to work against, and how we keep our team motivated in the face of burnout.

🖍✨ Just in time for back-to-school and cold & flu season!

The Komoto Family Foundation is excited to share a brand-new resource for families: Why Do I Need Shots? — a coloring book + patient vaccine info sheet created with illustrator Matthew Manos, the California Pharmacists Association, the California Chronic Care Coalition, and the California Department of Public Health.

These resources address common vaccination questions from children and their caregivers — and they’re available in English, Spanish, Korean, Tagalog, and Punjabi, with more languages coming soon.

In 2022, our Executive Director was invited to her child’s elementary school to talk about her job as a pharmacist. Searching for activity books on the topic, all she found at that time were coloring books portraying pharmacists as people who sell medicine in stores. Not wanting to misrepresent her profession, Dr. Colayco wrote her own copy, downloaded a free app, drew some quick sketches on her phone, and had them printed into books. The kids asked lots of questions and shared their own experiences getting vaccinated by their pharmacists. Following the success of the prototype, Dr. Colayco hired a professional artist, Matt Manos and together, they developed the next edition.
In 2023, we launched “Who is My Pharmacist?” in English, Spanish, and Tagalog just in time for Read Across America week. Today, the book is available in 10 languages! Don’t see yours represented? Send us a DM.
Many thanks to our sponsors Kern Family Health Care USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 986 PharmacyVietnamese Pharmacists Association USA for making it possible for us to distribute 8,000 copies so far!

Over the years, we’ve participated in Career Days and Read Across America events at K-12 schools in Delano and neighboring communities to showcase the pharmacy profession from the perspective of pharmacists, technicians, and community health workers/promotores de salud. By planting seeds early on, we can inspire young people to further their education and give back to their communities when they become professionals 👩🏾‍⚕️👨🏿‍⚕️🧑🏻‍⚕️🩺💊
