Kids lives are precious - just ask
“What are the age ranges of using a CAT tourniquet? We often get this question. Nobody wants to think about having to use a TQ on a kid, but you should be prepared. Below is a list of articles supporting the use of the CAT TQ down to 14month old and limb circumference of 5.1 inches (very small).
Check out JEMS in (November 2018) for a great review – Pediatric Extremity Hemorrhage and Tourniquet Use.
This study reveals that the Combat Application Tourniquet is also suitable for use in school-aged children. (American Academy of Pediatrics, Pediatrics June 2019)
The CAT application successfully occluded arterial circulation in 100% of the studied limbs.11 arms, 13 legs age 2-7yo. Successful limb occlusion down to a limb circumference of 13CM (JoT 2020, Kelly, et al. ).
Retrospective review of 88 pediatric (4-17yo) uses (93% survival) from the Joint Trauma Registry. (Kragh et al. Pediatric Emergency Care 2012).
2017 Case report 7yo (70lb) successful leg application (Jun ’17, PEC).
Case Report 14month old with traumatic amputation of lower leg with successful CAT Gen 7 application. (JSOM Spring 2021).
With very small limbs it is much easier to occlude arterial flow through various methods, but this is published evidence on what works. Ethical considerations prevent a blinded study on age range, but case studies and expert consensus can logically be applied here.”
