Springtime Gold: Morel Mushrooms in Western North Carolina!

If you’ve ever stumbled upon a morel mushroom in the wild, you know the thrill - they’re like nature’s treasure! These honeycomb-capped mushrooms start popping up in Western North Carolina as early as late March and can be found through May, depending on elevation and rainfall.

Where to Look:
Morels love old burn sites, river bottoms, and areas with rich, moist soil. Look around dead or dying elm, sycamore, ash, poplar, and apple trees. South-facing slopes are a great place to start early in the season, while shadier north-facing slopes become better as spring warms up.

Identification Tips:
Morels are hollow inside, with a cap that is attached directly to the stem - never separate. They have a unique pitted, honeycomb-like texture that sets them apart from toxic lookalikes like false morels. Always double-check with a field guide or experienced forager before consuming any wild mushroom.
