Thank you to Enrich - Richmond, KY for a beautiful evening last night and to everyone who came out to see Shuffle. Richmond is a special place for the film, home in a lot of ways. And so it was great to bring the film home and share it with such an engaged and generous audience.

The Q+A felt like a town hall. More than just questions, people shared of themselves and their experiences. Thank you to everyone who stayed and shared.

If we connected personally after the film, please reach out if we don’t first. If we didn’t have a chance to connect personally, we’d love to hear from you.

And please sign up for our mailing list, we’d like to keep in touch.

I didn’t know anything about rehab before I needed it. I think that’s true for a lot of people. There’s no real point of reference. I’d heard of people going to rehab, even knew a few people who went. But I had no idea of what rehab actually was. If you’d asked me about the process, I couldn’t have told you. And when I eventually found myself entering rehab, I had no idea what to expect.

With 1 in 4 people affected by addiction these days, it seems crazy to not know what help looks like.

Check out the doodle below. This is what addiction treatment looks like, in theory, at least it did for me. I’m not suggesting that it works for everyone, but when someone says they’re going to rehab or a treatment center, it’s most likely some version of this. It’s called the Florida Model. More on that later.

What does it mean?

It’s a step-down model of care, typically starting with detox, like a hospital stay. I was in detox for 9 days. For those who choose to continue treatment, moving into a sober home is often the next step, while attending a day program of treatment and group therapy called a Partial Hospitalization Program or PHP. After a few weeks, usually 3 or 4, an individual steps down to IOP or Intensive Outpatient Program, a half day program. And from there, it’s Outpatient OP, a once a week check in. All in, a program can last anywhere from 30 to 90 days.

There are more treatment centers in the US than McDonald’s.

15,000+ private treatment facilities compared to 13,637 McDonald’s. Maybe this sounds like a good thing, and maybe it is. More treatment centers must mean more people are getting treatment. But they aren’t. Roughly 90% of people needing treatment, don’t have access or choose not to.

I’m not an economist. But this would suggest those 15,000+ treatment centers are able to survive by serving only 10% of the market. How? Repeat business. Treatment facilities thrive on relapse and repeat business. Long-term recovery represents a loss of profit.

It may sound cynical, but it’s important to acknowledge the financial undercurrents of what has become the $50+ billion dollar a year recovery industry. They make money whether anyone gets sober or not.

In 2018, I got sober at a treatment center in Chicago. I lived in a sober home for a year after that. I went to meetings everyday. It was the most transformative experience of my life. And then I heard a story.

A friend of mine got sober in Florida and told me kids were being recruited into sober homes for their insurance policies. Many of the kids were dying. And the ones who didn’t die, just went on to another treatment center. I was floored.

It’s called the Shuffle. But what exactly is the Shuffle?

The Shuffle is a process by which clients are cycled through a rinse-and-repeat style of addiction treatment for maximum profit. It can generate up to $1 Million a year per person, if it doesn’t kill them first.
