Freckles don’t just show up on your skin—your eyes can have them too! They can form on the conjunctiva, the iris, or even the choroid, which sits inside the eye. It’s important to keep an eye on them (literally) to make sure they stay stable.

I’m can’t say what or how or when 🤐 But I can say that the best is going to get better. I’m proud to be a part of the effort to raise the bar for glaucoma surgery and help bring the next generation of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery techniques and tools to the world. Every day, I have the privilege of using these technologies to liberate patients from their daily glaucoma medications and halt the progression of this disease. Most importantly, I get to help patients avoid the more invasive surgeries of the past. As a surgeon, I get to stand on the shoulders of giants, and I wanted to showcase the faces of some of these giants :)

I’m incredibly proud to be a part of the Sight Sciences speaker program discussing one of the most innovative minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries today.

In the past, glaucoma patients faced undergoing invasive surgical treatments when their condition worsened. Today, minimally-invasive surgeries like the OMNI surgical system enable eye surgeons to give their patients safer surgical options that can lower eye pressure, reduce medication burden, and ultimately save vision without the need for riskier surgeries.

I’m so excited to speak about this innovative technology, and I’m incredibly humbled to be in the company of such an esteemed group of speakers at ASCRS!

This is an example of a patient whose eye was struck by a piece of metal during construction work, highlighting the significance of wearing proper safety glasses. When the metal struck the eye, it injured the iris and pupil causing permanent damage. Although the piece of metal was removed more than 40 years ago when the trauma had occurred, the patient is still living with the aftereffects today such as blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and nighttime vision loss.

April is Sports Eye Safety Month!! According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, over 30,000 sports related injuries are treated each year in the United States alone! The majority of these injuries are preventable with the proper protective gear. Protective gear may seem like a menial extra step, but they can protect one from significant eye injuries. Some of these injuries may cause, but are not exclusive to, corneal abrasions, traumatic iritis, and hyphema.

The American Society for Testing and Materials set the standard for protective gear, thus making them the best reference for questions regarding the type of protective gear recommended for specific activities. Some examples of protective gear would be: Protective Sports Glasses with Polycarbonate Lenses, Helmets with a Polycarbonate Face Mask or Wire Shield, and Thumbless Gloves.

If in the case a sports related eye injury has occurred, do not hesitate to find an Ophthalmologist to get it checked as soon as possible. Waiting can result in a loss of vision or blindness with the injured eye.

One of the most common forms of vision loss is a metallic foreign body that becomes embedded in the cornea. This happens when metallic foreign bodies are released from high energy events, such as from strikes from a hammer, drilling, grinding metals, and welding. Foreign bodies almost always cause some scarring of the cornea, and can lead to infections as well. If the foreign body strikes the center of the cornea, it can cause lasting vision loss from scarring, even if it is removed. More serious, is that if the foreign body has enough speed and energy, it may pe*****te the cornea and enter the eye, causing a very dangerous and blinding reaction necessitating emergency surgery to remove it.

In the first image, the metallic foreign body is embedded in the cornea, near the central part of the cornea. It is surrounded by an orange circle, which is the orange rust ring caused by oxidation, it has likely been present for a few days. Luckily, it is not involving the very center of the cornea, and it has not pe*****ted the whole cornea.

In order to remove the foreign body a delicate procedure is performed in the clinic, by the eye surgeon. The rust ring is removed very carefully as well, sometimes necessitating the use of fine instruments or even rotary instruments to smooth out any defects.

The second image is after the foreign body is removed and a craterlike defect is present where the foreign body once was. Because there is still a defect in the cornea, the patient needs continuous antibiotics to prevent infection. The patient is seen daily until the defect heals.

Corneal foreign bodies are PREVENTABLE! Most of the patients that we encounter with a corneal foreign body are not wearing any eye protection!
