Before ➝ After: Rubio Canyon, Trail Connector, Altadena 🌿

What was once a narrow, eroded, and less stable section of trail has been transformed into a safer, stronger, and more welcoming pathway.

Bellfree Contractors completed trail improvements in Rubio Canyon, Altadena, with support from Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy, focusing on long-term stability, accessibility, and user experience.

The project included the construction of sutter-style retaining walls, installation of timber-box steps, and maintenance, widening of the trail corridor. These improvements reduced erosion, increased safety, and enhanced the natural character of the trail while making it more enjoyable for the community.

We’re proud to contribute work that strengthens outdoor infrastructure and supports safe, sustainable access to nature.

🚧 The Haskell Canyon Bike Park Project in Santa Clarita is on its way to becoming one of Southern California’s premier mountain biking destinations.

Here’s what you can look forward to:
✅ 16+ miles of cross-country, climbing, and downhill trails
✅ Dirt jumps, Slopestyle & Downhill Jump Lines, Dual Slalom, and pump tracks
✅ A skills learning zone and beginner-friendly areas

In January 2009, Hans Keifer became the new owner of Bellfree Contractors. As Roger Bell (who founded Bellfree) said, “a better choice could not have been made. Hans has quickly demonstrated a level of technical expertise and business acumen that bodes exceptionally well for the continued success of Bellfree.”

In 2017 Hans founded Trails For Change NGO in Armenia which has championed in youth education and trail development creating opportunities for local communities and promoting sustainable tourism.

From building trails and facilities in the U.S. to creating eco-tourism opportunities and tourism infrastructure in Armenia, Hans brings the same passion and expertise.💪💪💪💪

As an outdoor enthusiast, he has spent decades building and maintaining trails — both as a volunteer and as a leader.

Recently we have completed a project in Cleveland National Forest, near Julian, CA.

Cha Chaany Trailhead Parking is the trailhead for the popular Three Sisters Falls Trail. This project was contracted through the National Forest Foundation in partnership with the US Forest Service.

We constructed a parking lot to accommodate 80 vehicles.

Job Description: Trail Builder

Bellfree Contractors is a General A contracting firm based in Los Angeles seeking experienced trail builders and machine operators. We work throughout Southern California with an occasional out of state or international project. We specialize in trail construction and repairs. This also includes working on trail structures and amenities such as retaining walls, bridges, stairs, rock work, toilet construction, shade structures, decks...

Qualifications:

• Basic understanding of construction, maintenance, and safety best practices.
• Must be able to read and write english.
• experience leading crews is a plus but not necessary.
• Skills in safe use, operation, and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools, as well as other mechanical equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining effective communications with the rest of the team.
• Ability to regularly carry 50 pounds in mountain terrain and work under physically demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather.
• Must have valid drivers license with insurable driving record, and reliable personal transportation.
• Wilderness First Aid (or higher) and CPR training (training can be provided for the right candidate).
• Ability to hike and campout on projects.

Demo of old pit toilets and installation of Decomposing toilets at Spruce Grove CG.

Project with LACC and the NFF at the Spruce Grove Camp ground in the Angeles National Forest. Tools and supplies were brought in by Donkeys. Material and hardware brought in by helicopter to a helipad 1/2 mile away and then hand carried to the project site.
