Vitamin A, at any dose, does not protect against measles and no parent should give to their child vitamin A in hopes of preventing measles. Vitamin A is a micronutrient, meaning very small amounts are all we need to stay healthy and we get those through a healthy diet and in recommended doses of over-the-counter multivitamin supplements. Larger doses of vitamin A given over prolonged periods are very dangerous and can lead to vomiting, blurry vision, headaches, and, when more severe, liver damage and coma.

It is recommended, that under a doctor's supervision, kids infected with measles be given vitamin A once a day for two days to reduce the severity of the illness. But that is a small amount in a medical setting. The only way to prevent measles is to get your child vaccinated with the MMR vaccine. Talk to your pediatrician with questions.

Your child’s growing independence from the family and interest in friends might be obvious by now. Healthy friendships are very important to your child’s development, but peer pressure can become strong during this time. Children who feel good about themselves are more able to resist negative peer pressure and make better choices. Here is a positive parenting quick tip to help you support your 9 to 11-year-old during this time:

MAKE CLEAR RULES AND STICK TO THEM. TALK WITH YOUR CHILD ABOUT WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM THEIR BEHAVIOR WHEN NO ADULTS ARE PRESENT. IF YOU PROVIDE REASONS FOR THE RULES, IT WILL HELP THEM TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IN MOST SITUATIONS.

Children experience all of the same complicated, wonderful, confusing, and big emotions that adults do. It’s okay to feel all emotions, including feelings that are pleasant and uncomfortable. Emotions are important because they provide us with information about ourselves and our environment. They help us connect with one another. Learning how to notice, label, and express their feelings helps children feel more in control of their emotional experiences.

Encourage your elementary schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Label and name feelings to increase emotional vocabulary AND reinforce that you can feel more than one emotion at a time.
2️⃣ Notice body sensations that are attached to different emotions and provide clues for what they are feeling. Sometimes it's easier to notice physical symptoms first.
3️⃣ Rate the feeling of emotions on a scale of 1 to 10 to capture what we feel emotions in different amounts or intensities.

🏋️‍♀️Are you worried about iron? Iron is a concern for all small kids, including kids eating a heavy dairy diet and kids eating plant-based diets.⁣

A few tips:⁣
🍊 Serve a vitamin C source at every meal and snack. Iron is found in animal foods as well as plant foods. It’s easier to absorb iron through animal products (meat, poultry, fish, etc.). If you combine vitamin C with plant foods, you increase the iron absorption 2-4x!

🐄 If you serve animal milks (cow, goat, etc.), don’t serve more than 16 oz per day.⁣

💊 If your pediatrician says your child has low iron, ask about supplements. It is not usually practical to resolve an iron deficiency with diet alone. ⁣
