Our kids are listening and they are reading into the meaning behind what we're saying - more than we think! SHARE this post if you want to spread the word that we don't need to be using unhelpful language about foods in front of our kids.

You can't control what everyone else says, but you can control what you say when your child is around...even when you think they aren't listening.

Doing chores is important for a child’s development. They help kids learn life skills and responsibility. Doing chores also teaches kids how important community is, whether it’s their family or their school or their neighborhood. They can boost confidence, too! Consider trying these tips when preparing your child to start doing chores or if your child is struggling to complete their chores:

1️⃣The earlier you start having kids do chores, the better. You can have them start doing little things around the house when they’re 3 or 4.

2️⃣Making chores part of a routine can help. Giving kids a choice of which chores they do and keeping a chore chart can also be helpful.

3️⃣Making the chore specific, like asking them to put their books away and then put their toys away, is better than saying, “Clean your room.” Being specific lets kids know what is expected. Breaking chores down into steps is especially important for kids with ADHD or learning disorders.

4️⃣Rewarding kids with praise or an allowance for completing chores gives kids a sense of accomplishment. You can build toward doing more or harder chores. For example, start by having your kid make their bed once a week and slowly build until they do it every day.

5️⃣If a kid knows what chores are expected of them but doesn’t do them, you can tell them you’re taking away their allowance or screen time. This way, kids start to understand that their choices have consequences. Then you can encourage them: “Next week is another chance to do your chores and earn your allowance. I know you can do it!”

With more and more cases of measles in the news, parents may be wondering if their baby or toddler can get the first or second dose of the MMR vaccine early. Babies ages 6 through 11 months old can receive the first MMR dose early and they should if traveling internationally or they live in an area with an outbreak. For older children, the second dose of the MMR vaccine is recommended at school entry around age 4 through 6, but it can be administered early if it has been at least 28 days since the first dose. Talk to your child’s pediatrician with questions about your family’s situation. They can help you decide if your child should be vaccinated early.

WIC is so powerful. If you qualify for it, then it can be a lifesaver. If you don’t, support folks who are using it and check your judgments at the door.

Food is expensive these days.

Affordable Flavors is our cost saving meal plan for families. It will help you feed your family of 4 on $550 a month. It includes all of the recipes, shopping lists, and flavor that make it work.

It’s available on a sliding scale. You can get it free if you need it free, at a reduced cost, at the typical cost, and at a cost that gives one to someone else. Organizations can make bulk orders of Affordable Flavors and we partner with WIC and other agencies.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention on purpose to the present moment, without judging or trying to change your experience. The practice of mindfulness can help teens to increase their self-awareness, self-control, and attention. It can also reduce their emotional suffering and increase compassion for themselves and others. Practicing mindfulness allows teens to see reality more accurately and without judgment. Regular practice will help to foster an increased sense of well-being for your child.

Encourage your high schooler to watch this video of kids talking about their emotions. Even better — watch it with your child and discuss these key findings together:

1️⃣ Mindfulness is an ongoing practice, just like daily physical exercise.
2️⃣ There are three mindfulness skills to focus on with your teen:
— Observe: Notice, without words, what is going on in the environment or in their body.
— Describe: Name what they notice using descriptive and non- judgmental language.
— Participate: Throw themselves fully into an activity or experience.
