I got on my 12 year old treadmill with the cracked 8 year old iPad and watched a show for 5 miles in my non-aesthetic basement. I could have cropped the background, left out the cracked screen (although the treadmill screen is cracked too 😂) and pretended that there aren’t parts of my life that are messy. But I think we could all use a little more real life views to remind us that life is always going to be just a little bit messy.

Stop judging your past decisions and actions to how you would handle it now. You grew through those experiences, that’s why you shake your head at your past self. Give grace, take a breath and set the past down.

Therapy, when done well should allow you to build a relationship with your therapist and have a deep trust so you can practice difficult emotions and conversations. Your therapist should challenge you to help you grow so you will eventually challenge yourself. Every thought you have is not true, every feeling is not valid and every opinion is not infallible. If a therapist only agrees with you and makes you feel good, then there is no growth, no challenge. Build your capacity for difficult emotions and conversations so you have the ability to hold space and empathy for those who don’t agree with you. That is the mental strength we should be striving for!
