Alpha-pinene is a monoterpene that is found in many essential oils.
Alpha-pinene is most abundant in conifer trees like pine, fir, cedar and spruce. Other essential oils containing high concentrations of alpha-pinene include basil, rosemary, mint and eucalyptus.
Surprisingly for some, itβs also one of the most abundant terpenes in varieties of citrus like lime.
What does alpha-pinene do?
Preventing antibiotic resistance
One problem associated with using antibiotics to treat bacterial infections is that the bacteria can quickly become resistant to antibiotic drugs, rendering them ineffective. Alpha-pinene can help to prevent this. It is wonderful to use essential oils rich in alpha-pinene when you are on antibiotics to make them more effective and to prevent antibiotic resistance!
Promoting gut health
Several studies have tested the effects of alpha-pinene on intestinal disorders, particularly stomach ulcers. The results indicated that Ξ±-pinene may protect against ulcers and reduce damage to stomach tissue.
Anti-inflammatory effects
Alpha-pinene is a known anti-inflammatory agent. Several studies found that it drastically reduced inflammation in patients undergoing physical therapy after surgery. It also reduced nitrite production and exhibited anti-analgesic (aka pain killing) effects.
Essential Oils rich in alpha-pinene:
Rosemary essential oilβs main chemo type is camphor. The main chemical components of rosemary essential oil are camphene, alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. Rosemary oil has a strong, herbal and pungent aroma and is commonly inhaled to relieve congestion. Sufferers also use it topically to treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. Rosemary essential oil is also great in relieving pain and inflammation and is commonly used in topical pain creams.
An ancient essential oil from Egypt, Hyssop has been used for its cleansing and purifying properties, and it can help promote feelings of relaxation. Today, hyssop oil help to support the respiratory system by clearing congestion and functioning as a bronchodilator. Hyssop essential oil has very similar therapeutic benefits to French Lavender and is a great alternative to French Lavender if one does not like the scent or has a sensitivity to it.
Fir balsam essential oil comes from the resin of the balsam fir tree. It has a strong, sweet, and resinous aroma reminiscent of pine needles. Fir balsam essential oil is mostly used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It's also used in aromatherapy for its observed ability to ground and center individuals emotionally, as well as for its ability to ease respiratory problems like bronchitis
