💤October is SIDS Awareness Month - a time to remind parents and caregivers to follow safe sleep practices to help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

👶Most SIDS deaths occur between 2-4 months, often linked to unsafe sleep environments.

🛏️Reduce the risk by following these safe sleep tips:
🔹Always place your baby on their back to sleep, including naps.
🔹Use a flat, firm mattress with a fitted sheet in a crib or bassinet.
🔹Keep the baby's sleep space in your room for at least the first six months.
🔹Avoid blankets, pillows, bumpers, and soft toys.
🔹Keep you baby's head uncovered and avoid overheating.

⁉️Did you know that New York State is home to nine species of bats? Six hibernate in caves and mines, while three migrate south for the winter. In the fall, bats eat up to their body weight in insects to build fat for hibernation or migration, and they gather in large numbers to mate during the seasonal event called the “fall swarm.”

🦇Because bats are crucial for the ecosystem, it’s important to observe them from a safe distance. Bats can carry rabies, so never handle them with bare hands. If you find one in your home, contact your local health department for guidance.

🗣️This week is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week!

🎨Young children are most vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can cause serious and lasting health problems.

🩸Since lead poisoning often shows no symptoms, the only way to know is through a blood test. If your child is younger than 6 years of age, talk to your healthcare provider about getting a blood lead test.

📌To learn more about the risks of childhood lead poisoning and how to prevent it, please visit: www.saratogacountyny.gov/lead.

👏Global Handwashing Day serves as a good reminder that clean hands make a big difference in keeping our community healthy.

🧼Germs that cause illnesses like a cold, flu, diarrhea, and respiratory infections can easily travel from person to person through everyday contact. Handwashing with soap and water is one of the easiest ways to stop the spread of germs at home, school, work, and in public spaces.

🤧Remember to scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, especially before preparing food or eating, after using the restroom, and after coughing or sneezing.
