Play therapy is such an important therapeutic modality for kids. And often gets judged and overlooked.

So why is playing so important anyway? For many different reasons.

Play is safe
Play is a universal language
Play helps us express feelings and emotions. Some we are aware of, some we are not.
Play does not require high cognitive skills
Play allows child to show all parts of themselves.

Play therpay is perfect for kids who have adhd, trauma, anxiety, depression.

Regulation is a term that is said a lot but loses its meaning at times. Regulation can mean balance. When it comes to balance, it means balancing the energy inside of us.

It’s like a thermostat at home. Not too hot and not too cold. Just keeping it at that temperature. Otherwise, we might have some behaviors that emerge showing us that the temperature is off.

It’s the energy of our nervous system trying to keep its balance based on the level of safety it is sensing. This does not mean you have to be calm! You can be angry and regulated.

Let’s think of kids and school. School can be very dysregulating even if kids don’t say it is. They may be perfect in school, and then come home and be all over the place or need to chill for a while. They are trying to rebalance themselves from the events or stress from school.

Think of your own life where you go somewhere that makes you feel unbalanced and need to home and do nothing for a while. Your own system needs to be rebalanced. Our kids need that too. They just don’t always know how to say it. But their behaviors do!
