Smart food choices = Healthy smiles

Plaza Orthodontics team believes great smiles start with what’s on your plate! The foods you choose every day play a big role in keeping teeth strong and braces or aligners on track.

Crunchy fruits & veggies like apples (cut into slices) and carrots
Dairy products like cheese and yogurt for strong enamel
Water to rinse away food particles and protect your smile

Foods to avoid with braces or aligners:

• Sticky candies (caramel, taffy, gummies)
• Hard foods (nuts, ice, hard pretzels)
• Popcorn (kernels can damage wires)
• Hard or thick pizza crust
• Sugary & carbonated drinks
• Chewing gum

Aligner tip: Remove trays before eating or drinking anything except water, and brush before putting them back in to keep them clear and clean!

Healthy habits + regular orthodontic care = a confident, beautiful smile.

Breaking brackets can slow down your orthodontic treatment and lead to longer time in braces. Brackets are carefully placed to apply precise pressure that moves your teeth into proper alignment, and when one breaks or comes loose, that force is disrupted. This can cause teeth to shift incorrectly, delay progress, and require extra appointments to fix the damage. Broken brackets are often caused by chewing on hard or sticky foods, ice, pens, or fingernails, or by not following care instructions. Taking care of your braces helps keep your treatment on track, reduces the risk of additional costs, and gets you to your best smile faster.

Broken or Damaged Braces: The First Step to Take!

✅ Stop fiddling with it. Twisting or pulling can make things worse.

✅ Check what’s damaged:
Loose bracket
Poking wire
Missing elastic/tie
Band came loose

✅ Quick fixes you can do at home (temporary!)

Poking wire:
Cover it with orthodontic wax (your best friend).
If no wax, a small piece of sugar-free gum works in a pinch.

Loose bracket still on the wire:
Leave it where it is and wax it so it doesn’t rub.

Wire sticking out badly:
If a wire pokes your cheeks or gums, you can use tweezers to bend it toward your teeth and away from the softer tissues in your mouth. If a bracket is loose on the wire, you can use tweezers to position it between teeth or in the center of a tooth, ensuring it faces the right direction to avoid cuts or scrapes.

✅ Topical anesthetic like Orabase or Ora-Gel and over the counter pain rekeivers can be used to reduced inflammation and discomfort.

✅ Call our office to schedule an appointment for the broken bracket

Always let us know even if it seems minor.
Ask if it’s urgent or can wait until your next appointment.

Go in sooner if:
Pain is sharp or worsening
The wire is cutting your cheek or gums
A band or bracket came completely off

✅Preventing future breakage

Avoid hard/chewy foods (ice, popcorn kernels, nuts, hard candy)
Cut crunchy foods into small pieces
Don’t chew pens, nails, or open stuff with your teeth

Braces create extra spaces where food particles and plaque easily get trapped, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and white spot lesions. Regular professional dental cleaning helps remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing alone can’t reach during orthodontic treatment.
Clean teeth also allow braces to work more effectively, helping your teeth move safely and on schedule.
Maintaining good oral hygiene with routine dental cleanings protects your enamel, keeps your gums healthy, and ensures beautiful results when your braces come off.

How Often Should You Get Dental Cleaning with Braces & What to Expect:

If you have braces, dental cleaning is recommended every 6 months to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Professional dental cleanings during orthodontic treatment are similar to standard cleanings but require extra attention to detail. Your dental hygienist will carefully clean around your brackets and wires, removing plaque and tartar from all those hard-to-reach spots.
