Health isn’t built in one massive overhaul—it’s built in the small, consistent choices you make every day.

Progress in your health journey doesn’t have to be extreme or complicated. It can look like:

• Walking 1,000 more steps than you did yesterday
• Adding one new vegetable to your meals this week
• Cutting back on soda or sugary drinks
• Prioritizing sleep and getting an extra 30–60 minutes each night

These aren’t small things—they’re foundational health shifts that don’t get enough credit.

Too often, people feel stuck because they are overwhelmed with where to start. Health is a journey, and everyone at any stage can take steps to improve their health. Every step in the right direction counts, no matter how small it may seem.

The goal isn’t to be perfect—it’s to keep moving forward.

What’s one small change you’ve made (or plan to make) to improve your health?

When it comes to health, mindset is everything.

You can have the perfect plan, the best resources, and all the knowledge in the world—but if your mindset isn’t aligned, none of it sticks.

True health starts with two things:

Open-mindedness — the willingness to challenge what you think you know, try new approaches, and accept that change may feel uncomfortable

Belief — a genuine confidence that you can improve your health and that your efforts will lead somewhere meaningful

Without openness, you stay stuck. Without belief, you don’t start - or you quit early.

Patients who succeed aren’t always the most informed - they are the ones who decide “I’m ready to change, and I believe it’s possible.”

Health isn’t just physical. It’s a mental commitment before it ever becomes a lifestyle.

So the question is: Are you truly open to change - and do you believe you can succeed?

We ask our patients to prioritize their health every single day.

But are we doing the same?

Long hours. Missed meals. Poor sleep. Chronic stress.
Somehow, in healthcare, burnout has become normalized—and optimal health feels optional.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
Patients are far more likely to follow what we model than what we say.

So if we’re counseling on nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management…
are we holding ourselves to that same standard?

This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about credibility, alignment, and leadership.

Because the most powerful way to influence behavior isn’t through instruction—it’s through example.

I’m curious—

What is ONE specific step you are currently taking to prioritize your own health, despite the demands of healthcare?

Let’s share ideas and raise the standard together.

A lack of honest self-assessment is one of the biggest challenges I encounter with patients.

Most people believe they are healthier than they actually are. They think their nutrition is “pretty good,” their activity level is “decent,” and their habits are “not that bad.” But when we take a closer look, the reality often tells a different story.

We underestimate how often we consume processed food.We overestimate how much protein, fiber, and micronutrients we are getting. We convince ourselves that “busy” equals “active.”We normalize poor sleep, chronic stress, and low energy as just part of life.

This isn’t about judgment—it’s about awareness.

Because the truth is:You cannot optimize what you are not honest about.

Patients who see the best outcomes aren’t the ones who start out perfectly healthy. They’re the ones willing to take a clear, unfiltered look at their habits and say: “This is where I actually am.”

Real progress starts with accurate data—whether that’s nutrition tracking, body composition, sleep quality, or metabolic health markers. But even more importantly, it starts with dropping the stories we tell ourselves.

If you’re serious about improving your health, ask yourself:
* Am I measuring, or guessing?
* Am I consistent, or occasional?
* Am I honest, or optimistic?

Small, honest adjustments compound into meaningful change.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s alignment between perception and reality. Because that’s where real transformation begins.

What a pleasure speaking at the Inaugural Women’s Health & Wellness Seminar at Merritt Athletic Clubs. An educational panel of women discussed the benefits of exercise in both perinatal and perimenopause as well as how to find your exercise community. I was able to discuss modifiable lifestyle factors for better health with an emphasis on sleep and nutrition. Wonderful meeting so many new faces! Get in touch if you would like me to speak at your event 🤍

We underestimate oral health… until it becomes a systemic problem.

Your mouth is not separate from your body—it’s an extension of it.

Chronic gum disease (periodontal disease) isn’t just about bleeding gums or bad breath. It’s been linked to:

• Cardiovascular disease
• Diabetes complications
• Increased risk of stroke
• Adverse pregnancy outcomes

Why?

Because chronic inflammation and oral bacteria don’t stay localized—they enter the bloodstream and contribute to systemic inflammation.

As clinicians, we often focus on labs, imaging, and medications… but overlook one of the most accessible indicators of overall health: the mouth.

For patients preparing for surgery, this matters even more:
• Poor oral health → higher infection risk
• Increased inflammatory burden → slower recovery
• Untreated dental issues → potential perioperative complications

Optimization isn’t just about the OR—it starts long before.

Simple, high-impact steps:
• Brush and floss consistently
• Routine dental visits (even when nothing hurts)
• Address bleeding gums early—not later
• Treat the mouth like part of your medical care, not separate from it

Health is not siloed.

The mouth is a window—and sometimes a warning sign.

We meet you on one of the most important days of your life—yet many patients don’t realize what truly impacts their safety and recovery.

Here’s what matters:
1. Higher BMI and excess body fat increase the risk of complications with anesthesia, airway management, and recovery.
2. Untreated sleep apnea significantly increases the chance of breathing complications—especially with sedation, opioids, and after surgery.
3. Remove all metal body piercings
Even small piercings can cause burns during surgery due to electrical equipment. This is about safety, not policy.
4. NPO is not neglect—it’s protection
Fasting before surgery helps prevent aspiration, one of the most serious complications under anesthesia.
5. Your health going in determines how you come out. Better sleep, nutrition, metabolic health, and fitness → lower intraoperative risk and faster recovery.
6. Honesty can save your life
We need to know everything—medications, supplements, alcohol, and drugs (legal or not). This isn’t judgment—it’s physiology.

We don’t just “put people to sleep.”
We manage your body at its most vulnerable moment.

Preparation isn’t optional—it’s powerful.

Many of my patient conversations go the same way.

I ask:

“What medications do you take?”

And the response is often:

“My wife takes care of that.”

I hear this most commonly from men in their 60s and older.

Having a supportive partner who helps manage health is a gift. Spouses often play a huge role in keeping families healthy.

But moments like this highlight something important.

Every person should know what medications they take and why.

Not just the name.
But the purpose.

Your health can be supported by others.

But it can’t be outsourced.

A simple question worth asking yourself today:

Do you know what every medication you take is for?

❗️Inflammation is at the core of most diseases. Specifically, vascular disease, which includes high blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease and chronic kidney disease.

💊Alpha lipoic acid is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that increases microcirculation which means more oxygen to the tissues that most need it.

🔸Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a result of nerves not getting enough oxygen because the small blood vessels are damaged from the uncontrolled glucose levels. The best way to prevent this is to control your glucose levels, but if you have got to the point where you have developed peripheral neuropathy, than alpha lipoic acid can help!
