Yes, physical therapy can help with the pain experienced by those with hypermobility disorders and offers longer term solutions to manage it as well.

Amanda Hodgetts tells us how:

"For someone who is hypermobile or has a hypermobility disorder, that person usually has pain more consistently around their joints due to the increased motion.

This means that your ligaments and passive structures around those joints can no longer provide the passive support, so your body produces a painful response.

In PT we can work on strengthening your muscles to better stabilize your joints. This usually starts with unweighted stability drills, progressing to weighted work as the muscles get stronger."

Ever feel like time flies during your session and you didn’t get everything in? Totally normal — but here are a few ways to get the most out of every session:

🌿 Come with a goal in mind. Let us know if there's a specific activity you want to get back to doing or if a certain movement feels limiting. It helps us to better tailor a treatment plan around your specific goals.

🌿 Ask questions. You can even write down questions in advance. If there's something you'd like to bring up with your provider, the appointment is the best time to ask.

🌿 Arrive early. Check in and fill out any paperwork ahead of time so that visit time can be spent with provider.

🌿 Wear clothing you feel comfortable moving around in. Physical therapy sessions involve stretching, exercises, and hands-on techniques—so be ready to move!

🌿 Be honest with how things are feeling and if you're able to do home exercises. This helps us make the most effective treatment plan and meet you where you're at.

You have one on one time with your doctor of physical therapy, so make it count!
