Summer Reading Fun!
Summer is for swimming, playing, biking, camp, and just relaxing. However, it is important for children to practice their reading skills and any other educational or academic skills that need strengthening.
It is important that every child gets at least 20 minutes a day of reading, any content they wish. It can be beneficial and also fun for the children to have a certain time every day that they spend reading. It can be done with a parent, sibling, friend, or alone. You, as a parent, can coordinate a certain time of day, 20 to 30 minutes, before bedtime, after the morning routine, or when they get home from day camp, if they attend.
So, libraries, Amazon, and bookstores are great places for all types of books. There are also other online companies that sell both new and used books, where you can find both child and adult books.
To work on other skills, parents or tutors are good options, and only take out an hour to two of your child’s week! But, could be very worthwhile in getting them ready to start the new school year in September with confidence and readiness for what the new year will bring.

SLOW IT DOWN! When it comes to family dynamics, and the tendency for everyone to get a little too heated in disagreements or differences of opinion, so much can be gained just from slowing down the interactions. Instead of an escalation in tone and volume, which comes when each person is becoming defensive and feeling under attack, if we can all take a step back and bear in mind that things don't have to be resolved within one conversation - in fact, they rarely are - then we shall have more patience with each other. Learn to use several phrases to cool the temperature and slow things down, like:
"Hmm. Let me think about what you're saying."
"Is it okay if we continue talking about this tomorrow, because there's so much I want to understand about this."
"You know, I totally understand your feelings on this, and want to think on it a bit, to really understand you well. Can you tell me more about how you're seeing this.
This will genuinely help, especially if you can then take the other's perspective for a while, see it through their eyes, and get a feel for what they are feeling. Always try to: Empathize, and Validate. You'll get ahead much faster with this, though it may seem to you to be more of a long path. Patience, patience. Your turn to be understood will surely come, after you understand the other. Pay it forward. Good luck, and have an enjoyable summer with your family.

As the school year winds down and our kids let their hair down for summer fun, we need to plan their next academic year. Parents should be planning now for college or school admission with the right evaluation, in order to attain the accommodations they need. For ADHD (ADD), learning disability such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, verbal or nonverbal learning disability, anxiety or any other condition, the right evaluation, in time, can totally change the child's life for the better as they enter their new year of academics. Even for entry to 6th grade, the standards have become quite high in some schools. It doesn't have to be so tough; with the right support, the year can be a great one.
