This National Donor Day, we honor the life and legacy of Zach Stern. Zach was known for his incredible sense of humor and was a talented chef. Family meant a lot to him and he was super close with his mom, Pam.

When Pam was 31, she was diagnosed with a familial heart condition that Zach would develop in 2019. Due to the condition, he was hospitalized several times and sadly passed away in 2020. Zach saved and healed dozens of lives as an organ and tissue donor.

In 2023, Pam became very ill and needed a lifesaving heart transplant to survive. She received her second chance at life in 2024, and now volunteers with Infinite Legacy to share her story and more importantly, honor Zach.

Dr. Clive O. Callender, Professor of Surgery at Howard University College of Medicine, is a trailblazer in the field of organ and tissue donation. Since 1973, he has led transformative initiatives, including developing the first minority-directed dialysis and transplant center in the U.S.
In 1991, Dr. Callender founded the National Minority Organ/Tissue Transplant Education Program (MOTTEP), the first organization to combine disease prevention with increasing organ donation rates. Under his leadership, minority donation rates rose from 15% in 1990 to 30% in 2008, with Black donor rates exceeding other populations by 2018.
Dr. Callender has received numerous accolades, including the Medal of Excellence from the American Association of Kidney Patients and the Pioneer Award from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Through his groundbreaking work and over 150 scientific publications, he remains dedicated to saving lives and empowering communities.

It surprises many people to learn that less than 1% of deaths in the U.S. each year result in deceased organ donation. This rarity is what makes each donor hero truly remarkable and their impact so powerful.

Powerful storytelling meets purpose in “On Borrowed Time,” a series by Anissa Durham for Word In Black, uncovering the barriers and breakthroughs that shape organ donation and transplantation in the Black community.
Infinite Legacy's, Ieesha Johnson, Director of Community Outreach, shares her inspiring story in “The Call That Saves a Life,” reminding us why representation and awareness matter.

Not everybody survives the wait for an organ transplant. We spoke to eight Black Americans who received a transplant. Here’s what they said.
