Intensive In-Home Family Therapist turned Mental Health Educator, Advocate, & Coach.
03/31/2026
We are weeks past International Women's Day, & we're still celebrating, honoring, respecting, learning from, working with equitably, advocating for, & holding space for women, as they want & need. Every woman has value & deserves respect & equity simply for being alive. That said, throughout history, so many world-changing, civilization-changing, history-in-the-making moments have involved, been successful on the backs of, or been led by, but rarely fully recognized, women.
Take a minute & think about women-dominated industries- educators, caregivers, nurses, administrators, mental health professionals, dental/physician/veterinary assistants, community organizers, nonprofits, & supportive civil services, civil rights advocacy, survivors of violence, & all the services needed to undo the harm that women experience at a very high rate. The world would not function effectively without these women-dominated industries; communities & relationships would not exist without the physical & emotional labor provided by women.
When we listen to, trust, support, & empower women—especially those most at risk of oppression, such as Black, Trans, &/or Disabled women—we improve life for all women & enrich humanity regardless of gender through the full diversity of womanhood.

See you all tonight!!!
Today, 3/31, is the Trans Day of Visibility! We are celebrating all day long at MoCo Pride Center, ending with our big celebration at 5:30 PM by Live In Your Truth and Trans Maryland , and we want YOU to be a part of it.
The Coalition for Trans Visibility (CTV) is organizing a national media takeover today to flood the media with positive, accurate, and authentic portrayals of transgender people and those who support them. We want to see our community in action! If you want to participate...
DO:
Tell honest and true narratives about who we are
Talk about the barriers we are facing right now as a community
Speak from your own experience and area of expertise
Talk about the resilience of the community
Communicate that we are still here, have always been here, and will not be erased
DON’T:
Focus on trauma or excessive harm
Argue with the counter narratives. This is our day to tell our stories, not combat their false ones.
Fight within community. The goal is to send a unified front on this day. While we do not dismiss the very real differences in experiences based on intersections of identities, we want to focus on how we can come together as a community on TDOV.
Post interviews, podcasts, photo campaigns, short videos (3-5 minutes in length), or op-eds/blog posts! Or, simply post about media, narratives, and stories about transness that matter to you. Use the hashtag to join the movement, and tag us !
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE TRANS TO PARTICIPATE IN TODAY'S CAMPAIGN. While we acknowledge that TDOV has historically been to uplift trans voices, in our current political climate we need as many positive voices as possible. As long as cisgender people participating are still centering the trans community, they are more than welcome.
Share your story. Post your joy. Live in your truth. We will see you tonight for TDOV at MoCo Pride Center! https://liveinyourtruth.org/tdov2026

Valentine’s may be a full two weeks behind us. Black History Month/February is behind us as of this past Sunday... whether we’re talking about love or Black History, it’s important to make time for both on an ongoing basis for ourselves & the world around us.
Love is an extremely powerful force. It is so powerful that, throughout history, it has regularly been the target of those in power who love cruelty for their own selfish gain. The closer you are to the approved form of Whiteness, able-bodied, neurotypical, & straight, the less violently & directly your love is stigmatized, policed, & oppressed. The more Black you are, the more you & your love are violently & directly stigmatized, policed, & oppressed on top of further oppressing you for being Q***r, Neurodivergent, &/or Disabled. The darker your skin, the more visible your disability, neurodivergence, or sexuality, the more you are simultaneously infantilized, fetishized, & profited off of. The forces that oppress Black people & their rights use the same power to oppress everyone else, including white, able-bodied, cis folks.
However, this post isn’t meant to be depressing. One reason that oppressive forces control, manipulate, & try to commodify romance is that what is created by Q***r people, Neurodivergent People, Disabled People, People of the Global Majority & absolutely Black People, in love & human connection, is power, is beauty, is joy, is universal & can create wonders.
Share love
Embrace love
Celebrate love
Bolster love
Protect love
In doing so, we support each other and build toward something truly beautiful.

It's great to see her story of Black history actively being made during Black History Month
Erin Jackson was never “supposed” to be a Winter Olympic champion. A Black girl from Ocala, Florida—far from snow and ice—she grew up flying on inline skates and battling in roller derby, long before she ever touched a sheet of ice.
She didn’t try long‑track speed skating until her mid‑20s. In a sport where most stars start as kids, she was a beginner, often the only Black woman in the building. She slipped, learned, and kept showing up anyway.
Four years after first stepping on the ice, she made history: winning Olympic gold in the 500m and becoming the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in speed skating. Winning during Black History Month turned that moment into more than a medal—it became a living, breathing chapter of Black history.
In a sport that has long been visually and culturally white, Erin’s gold says to every Black kid watching: you belong in any lane, on any surface, in any arena. Her story started on Florida pavement, but it’s rewriting what’s possible on ice.

Whether knowledge that supports humanity, creativity that engages, entertains, & expands humanity, experience & expertise that grounds & strengthens mental health work, organizational work, community work, a lot of it came & continues to come from Black people.
A lot of what has been stolen, appropriated, destroyed, warped, denied, profited from, has also come from/at the cost to, Black people.
We're dedicated to continuing this discussion for the remainder of Black History Month & going forward. With new additions come more capacity. We’re relieved to finally be able to resume using this platform in ways that we haven’t been able to since 2020. This will include, with consent, amplifying melanated voices, profiles, creativity, joy, & more that we already follow on here & beyond.
Who do you follow that we should add to our list? Who have you learned from? Who do you want to celebrate?

A good anecdote of experience and history can go quite a way with helping people connect. This is mine. I hope you enjoy my story. There's a TLDR section at the bottom for those who aren't a fan of reading
At the beginning of February 2015, life was pretty good. I was recently married, in a ton of debt, flailing to finish a master's degree in Marriage & Family Therapy with all requirements successfully completed years prior except the thesis. My job at the time (2012-2020) was working for a nonprofit as an in-home family counselor after working at two different outpatient clinics as part of my degree. Many of the families I worked with during my time as an in-home counselor were at risk of the child being removed from the home due to behavioral issues often connected to a formal diagnosis or trauma, or other reasons related to external factors. I not only worked as their crisis counselor but as the parent educator, the emotional support person, the therapist, and the parent accountabilibuddy when they were struggling with maintaining the tough choices consistently.
It felt as though I was living on call. My specialty ended up developing toward attachment disorders, violence, self-harming behavior, clients hurt by past therapists/workers, and severe issues with emotional regulation and daily functioning. At some point, the phrase “getting stabbed isn’t so bad after the first time” actually came out of my mouth in full sincerity. On top of my work relationships, I had minimal boundaries with people in my personal life and worked a second job doing customer support and organizing. I was a people pleaser and an overfunctioner. I kept saying everything was fine while ignoring, avoiding, and numbing all the things that weren’t.
In February 2015, I first experienced what vertigo and migraines are like. It started with a week out sick. It quickly increased from there, and before you ask, no, there was no identifying traumatic event and up to this point, I had thought migraines were just an excuse people used to get out of work. I was burnt out, in debt with no end in sight, and working hard to maintain a ton of relationships and systems that were toxic to my physical and mental health. My lifestyle by definition was traumatic and unsustainable. Two years later I was diagnosed with a chronic pain disability and Fibromyalgia. It took me 4 years to get to a place where I was actually managing my pain, not having a daily migraine, and even when my functionality was higher than it had been in years, it was still slowly and gradually decreasing. I didn’t want to accept it. I was very angry with my avoidance.
Therapy was required. A lifestyle change was needed. These decisions were not ones I wanted to make. I wanted to die a martyr, doing the much-needed work that I loved before ever considering cutting back. Therapy was and continues to be an eye-opening adventure where being a therapist myself, I took notes and considered daily outside of my sessions. A lot has changed. My life is significantly smaller, but my relationships and connections are immensely more positive and sustainable. I maintain a daily mantra of "Kind, Curious, Authentic, and Intentional" and I work my ass off to remember that in the moment. Practice makes better, perfectionism is a trap. I've taken up audiobooks and in all my nerdiness, most of what I listen to is about mental health, trauma, resiliency, and the importance of learning to live authentically with a focus on prioritizing personal needs and mental health. My body is still struggling, but I'm actively achieving in my pain management, no longer just managing, surviving, or on fire. Of course, some days are far better than others and I've been working on self-compassion and awareness.
Before the current international health crisis, I was slowly accepting that I needed to transition to a remote position to focus on my health and continue doing the much-needed work I love. From all of this has come Calm Fox Coaching. A coaching practice with a clinical lens that strongly supports therapeutic relationships while attempting to help clients maintain intention and achieve holistic growth on a daily basis.
TLDR Section:
- I spent 8 years working as an intensive crisis counselor in the homes of my clients. I've also worked outpatient clinics and have experience both with middle-class families and homes, as well as long term homelessness, severe mental instability, and substance dependency and abuse.
- My life fell apart due to my own choices to not prioritize myself, and my health tanked resulting in chronic pain and Fibromyalgia.
- I was busted, to say the least. Most of us are busted in one way or another.
- After many years, a lot of my own therapy, and a lot of work, my health has improved. I know I can no longer do intensive in-home work, but that doesn't change the clear need that I have witnessed during my years in the field.
- Calm Fox Coaching was created to facilitate the support of individuals and families in need while also allowing me to prioritize my own physical, mental, and emotional well being, just as I encourage my clients.
