America is one of the most religiously diverse countries in the world.

There are over 600 Protestant Christian denominations alone—plus Catholic, Orthodox, Unitarian, Episcopalian, Latter-day Saint, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Neo-Pagan, Native American traditions, and many more… along with a growing number of atheist and agnostic communities.

Because of this diversity, when the phrase "under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954 (thanks to a campaign by the Knights of Columbus), the word “God” was intentionally left broad and undefined.

Why? At the height of the Cold War, it helped distinguish the U.S. from “godless communism”—while still being inclusive enough for many different beliefs.

One nation… interpreted in many spiritual ways. In a nation woven from so many beliefs, perhaps our greatest strength is remembering how to stand together—finding unity not in sameness, but in shared humanity.
