We Can’t Go Back. We Won’t Go Back.

People with disabilities cannot go back to institutions. And people with the highest support needs cannot have service reductions and possible service elimination pushed on them, in order to balance the State budget.

Join the Rally to Save DD Services
Thursday, March 12
12:00 – 1:00 PM
Lawyer’s Mall, Annapolis

The proposed Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) budget cuts would slash $155 million in state funding and more than $310 million when federal matching dollars are included. These cuts threaten the services that allow thousands of Marylanders with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live in their homes and communities.

Institutions or discharge from services cannot be the outcome for people who need these supports the most.

WE ARE FACING A CRISIS, and lawmakers need to hear from our community. When people with disabilities, families, providers, and advocates show up together, it sends a powerful message that these services matter.

Wear red and join the rally in Annapolis. A strong turnout will make clear that Maryland cannot balance the budget on the backs of people with disabilities.

March is Women’s History Month.

Disabled women have shaped history, advanced civil rights, challenged artistic norms and transformed how we understand disability.

From Judy Heumann’s leadership in the disability rights movement to Harriet Tubman’s abolitionist legacy, from Frida Kahlo’s groundbreaking art to Alice Wong’s impact on disability storytelling and advocacy, their contributions continue to influence generations.

Representation matters. History includes disabled women. Who else would you add to this list? Let us know in the comments.

Image description: Graphic titled “Disabled Women Who Shaped History” with NDI logo in the top right corner. The slide features four women with brief biographies and photos: Judy Heumann (1947–2023), disability rights activist and wheelchair user who helped lead the 504 Sit-in and advance the Americans with Disabilities Act; Harriet Tubman (c. 1822–1913), abolitionist and political activist who sustained a traumatic brain injury and likely lived with epilepsy; Frida Kahlo (1907–1954), Mexican painter who lived with chronic pain and mobility impairments; and Alice Wong (1974–2025), disability rights activist with spinal muscular atrophy and founder of the Disability Visibility Project. Portrait images of each woman appear below their biographies.

"Every day, The League's families face challenges like the ones that Liz and her daughter Ingrid are up against.

At this time, we are sincerely grateful to all of our supporters and allies. A united front is crucial to maintaining essential rights and services for people with disabilities." - David A. Greenberg, League President & CEO

The hearing on $150 million in proposed cuts to the Developmental Disabilities Administration was mostly dry, until recipients and family members began telling their personal stories, and two years of fears and frustration bubbled over.

On Tuesday, The Junior League of Baltimore Larks visited The League with an uplifting choral performance and nostalgic sing-a-long session. They brought smiles, laughs, and memories to participants in the Adult Medical and Meaningful Day Programs as they harmonized on the classics like "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and "You Are My Sunshine."
