Today marks the last day of Women's History Month! 💞
That's why we're celebrating Dr. Helen B. Taussig, a trailblazer whose work forever changed the landscape of pediatric medicine.
Known as the founder of pediatric cardiology, Dr. Taussig dedicated her career to understanding and treating congenital heart defects in children at a time when little could be done. Her compassion for patients and determination to find solutions led to one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the 20th century.
Working alongside surgeon Dr. Alfred Blalock and surgical technician Vivien Thomas at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Taussig helped develop the revolutionary “blue baby” operation—formally known as the Blalock-Thomas-Taussig shunt. This procedure provided lifesaving treatment for infants born with conditions like Tetralogy of Fallot, dramatically improving survival and offering hope to families worldwide.
Despite facing significant barriers as a woman in medicine, Dr. Taussig became a respected leader, educator, and advocate. She also played a pivotal role in identifying the link between thalidomide and birth defects, helping prevent further harm to children around the globe.
Her legacy lives on through the countless lives saved, the field she helped establish, and the generations of clinicians she continues to inspire.
Today, we remember Dr. Taussig not only for her groundbreaking achievements, but for her unwavering commitment to children and families everywhere.
