Black History Month, we honor Dr. Justina Laurena Ford, known as the “Baby Doctor,” who delivered an estimated 7,000 babies.

That number isn’t trivia — it’s a city’s future carried into the world by Black hands, again and again, while systems tried to deny her access, legitimacy, and space. When hospitals shut her out, the home became the clinic. When institutions refused her, the community became the proof.

Thousands of mothers supported through labor. Thousands of first breaths witnessed. Thousands of families who left with more than medical care — they left with dignity.

This is Black history: not only what gets recorded, but what gets remembered — because people are still here to tell the story.

The Steep Notes | Entry No. 4

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens)—“holy wood”—isn’t about smoke or trends. It’s a plant traditionally used for grounding, clarity, and intentional transition.

Its sweet, resinous aroma (citrus, mint, pine) comes from natural compounds like limonene, known for calming the nervous system and supporting focus. Even unlit, it carries scent—burning simply releases what time has already developed.

Important context:
True Palo Santo is never cut alive. It’s harvested only after the tree falls naturally and rests for years, allowing the resin to mature. Ethics and potency go hand in hand.

When burned, it isn’t meant to clear everything out—it’s used to call yourself back in.
Pause. Breathe. Reset.

This is why we share the story—not just the wood.

February isn’t just a calendar month for us — it’s a continuum.

A reminder that Black wellness has always lived in movement, conversation, breath, and gathering.

This month, we’re showing up where our people already are:
in gyms, on walking paths, in wellness spaces, and on campuses — sharing tea, stories, and ancestral care in real time.

Each event is an offering.
A pause.
A chance to reconnect with the body, the block, and the legacy we carry forward.

Come sip with us.
Come build with us.
Come be reminded that wellness has always been ours.

🖤 Black history isn’t behind us — it’s happening live.

Black History Month is about reclaiming what was interrupted—not reinventing ourselves, but remembering ourselves.

Every intentional act is resistance.
Every shared resource is legacy.
Every lesson passed forward is history in motion.

Honey isn’t just a topping — it’s a bridge.
This post offers a few ways to build with it: stirred into warm tea, drizzled over fruit, folded into breakfast bowls, blended into smoothies, or paired with roasted vegetables.
A simple drizzle slows you down.
It invites balance, softness, and care into whatever you’re building - food, ritual, or routine.
At Holmes Hydration, we see honey as a companion to wellness, not the main event.
It complements, enhances, and makes space.
Build gently. Build intentionally.

We’ve learned something over time: people don’t need more motivation.
They need more support.

That’s the heart of Holmes Hydration x Merritt Clubs Downtown—a members-only in-club experience built around tea ritual + education that’s practical, not performative. A small pause. A real reset. A reminder that taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated to be powerful.

Gratitude to M. Jones for trusting us and sharing her experience.

To have an idea, act on it, and see it support someone’s daily life is not lost on us. This blend was actually the second formula we ever developed, created after recognizing how many of our shared challenges begin in the gut. Digestion, energy, and overall balance are deeply connected—and we wanted to offer something gentle, intentional, and consistent enough to become part of a real routine.

This is why we blend.
For the quiet wins.
For the daily cups that make life feel more manageable.

That’s what we’re here for.
Small-batch. Intentional. Accountable to the community.
Peace.

New to loose-leaf tea?
Let’s walk it through—no guesswork.

1️⃣ Start with a mug
Run hot water into your mug to warm it first. This helps the tea steep evenly once the herbs are added.

2️⃣ Place your infuser in the mug
The infuser goes in before the water. It creates space for the herbs to open fully.

3️⃣ Add your tea to the infuser
Start with 1 teaspoon. Loose-leaf expands as it steeps, so you don’t need much.

4️⃣ Heat your water
Hot, not rushed. Pour slowly over the herbs so they can bloom properly.

5️⃣ Cover your cup
This keeps the steam, aroma, and herbal support in the mug where it belongs.

6️⃣ Give it time
Let it steep. This is where the tea becomes the tea.

Loose-leaf isn’t complicated—it’s intentional.
With each cup, you’ll learn your rhythm: how strong you like it, how long you need, what feels right for your body.

This is how you begin.
Save this for later and sip with confidence.
