Before you hire ANYONE to help you start your healthcare business, do your homework first.

Here's something no one tells new owners: hiring a consultant, attorney, or licensing company before you understand the basics of your own business is like handing someone your credit card before asking what they're buying.

You don't need to know everything. But you DO need to know enough.

Before you reach out to a professional for help, make sure you can answer these questions:

✅ What type of business do I actually want to open?
(Home health agency? Assisted living? Group home? Behavioral health clinic? These are NOT the same and each has different licensing, staffing, and startup requirements.)

✅ What state and county will I operate in?
Regulations vary dramatically by location. What's required in Virginia may be completely different from Texas or Georgia.

✅ Who is my target population?
Elderly adults? Adults with disabilities? Youth? People in recovery? Your population determines your license type, your staff credentials, and your funding sources.

✅ What is my realistic startup budget?
Do you know the difference between startup costs and operating costs? Do you know what a typical license application fee runs in your state?

✅ Have I read my state's regulations at least once?
Your state health department publishes the rules. You don't have to memorize them, but you should know they exist and where to find them.

💡 Why does this matter?
When you reach out to a consultant or agency without this basic foundation, two things happen:
1️⃣ You can't tell if the advice you're getting is actually right for YOUR situation
