Please join us for breakfast next Tuesday, February 3rd as we share tips for talking with our representatives, council-people, and legislators! You do not have to be planning to join Advocacy Day to participate. Opportunities exist year-round to share our stories and make a difference, and participating in this quick training is a great first step to gaining the confidence to be a part of improving Maryland’s mental health. Register at advosmarts.eventbrite.com so we know how much coffee to order!
Mental health advocates make a difference.
In 2024, thanks to years-long efforts, Maryland lawmakers passed a bill to permanently fund the 988 Lifeline in our state, creating a foundation for accessible 24/7 mental health and crisis support that is now in full operation.
Today, we face a major shortage in school counselors and psychologists. And there are bills up for debate that could help psychologists from other states transfer their license here so they can practice sooner, helping bridge the gap.
The Consortium on Coordinated Community Supports, which provides mental health services to students, has seen significant funding fluctuations. The Governor's fiscal 2027 budget plan proposes a lower funding level, with reports indicating a $20 million reduction from previous expectations.
And we are still fighting to end Fail First insurance practices, which prevent people from being able to access the medications they need, that will actually work, sooner.
Lending your voice locally can help improve the lives of the 1 in 5 impacted by a mental health condition, and their families.
We hope you join us, and together for mental health!
