Helping Up Mission

Helping Up Mission Restoring hope. Rebuilding lives. For nearly 140 years… and counting! We are a faith based, privately funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
(338)

We provide programs and services to men and women suffering from homelessness and addiction. Our long-term, residential Spiritual Recovery Program is our flagship. Since 1995, we have helped hundreds of men break the cycle of addiction, poverty, and homelessness. The average homeless man or woman we serve has survived two decades of substance abuse and years on the streets. They come to us addicted, destitute, and dysfunctional — with no realistic capacity to recover on their own. For a man or woman in that condition, a “quick fix” doesn’t exist. Healing requires a holistic approach. By God’s grace, lives are transformed as men and women who have suffered for years — or in many cases, decades — on the streets rise up and regain their purpose, hope, and independence. As they do, all Baltimore is blessed along with them; our community experiences healing.

Grace and peace to our HUM Family this Friday!

Today, we proudly recognize Jose, Durell, and Elmer as they complete our Spiritual Recovery Program—a meaningful milestone shaped by perseverance, faith, and a steady commitment to move forward each day.

“So if the Son sets you free,
you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36

As these men step into what’s next, we honor the work they’ve done, the growth they’ve achieved, and the hope they now carry. Their journeys remind us that true freedom, healing, and transformation are possible through faith, accountability, and community.

Helping Up Mission was honored to partner with The CFG Bank yesterday for an inspiring day of service and community engagement.

Their team joined our Mobile Street Outreach bus to distribute essential items and hot beverages to neighbors in need across Baltimore. Volunteers also spent time at our Center for Women & Children helping residents create vision boards that reflect their goals, hopes and plans for the future. In addition, they supported clothing distribution through our Gifts in Kind boutique at the women’s center, ensuring residents had access to quality clothing with dignity and care. The team also served lunch at both centers, providing nourishment and meaningful connection throughout the day.

We are grateful for CFG Bank’s continued commitment to serving our community and walking alongside the men, women and families we support as they rebuild their lives.

Many of our men have grown up in an urban environment, so time with the horses is often a completely new experience. Out here, they slow down, breathe, and begin to feel something they have not felt in a long time.

Lita and Ric Hughes lead Helping Up Mission’s equine therapy program. Their son, Cooper, graduated from Helping Up Mission, and he found real peace with the horses. Cooper has since passed away, but his story remains deeply woven into this work.

Ric says, “You can feel God’s fingerprints on the day.”

Lita adds, “The men feel full, they feel peace and they feel God.”
