Did you know that when a person is ready to give birth, when the baby is ready AND the parent is ready, a unique pulse will show itself on the tip of the pregnant person’s middle finger 😯 This is easier to recognize if your fingers have been trained in pulse diagnosis, but I also find it’s NOT subtle. Use your index finger with light touch to palpate the pulse, not your thumb.

Acus: check out this phenomenon if you’re lucky enough to treat pregnant patients as they’re moving into their birthing time. I’ve found the pulse as early as 37 weeks gestation, and I’ve had patients go 41+ weeks with no middle fingertip pulse (and they ended up birthing fine, don’t stress). This unique pulse presentation is an important piece for diagnosing labor readiness that is often (err… always) left out of “standard” birth prep protocols.

This middle finger is the Pericardium finger. Is your heart in it? Are you scared shtless? Worried about being a good parent? Worried there isn’t enough love? Maybe the existential dread of our current world? If we’re honest, most of us are, to some degree, before birthing a baby. A little moxa/needle on Ren-15 can help.

This specific middle finger pulse is what I’m looking for when performing birth readiness treatments in the last week or two of pregnancy. I expect this fingertip pulse to come at the end of a treatment, if our wills are in alignment with the big cosmic Will, which is not always a given. Sometimes the readiness just takes time. Sometimes the pulse comes with the usual SP-6, LI-4 etc. labor points. Sometimes treating the HT/PC is all that’s needed, even at-home acupressure. Often the pulse will come without any intervention. I find that labor starts within 24 hours of the middle finger pulse presenting itself. Chinese medicine never ceases to amaze. Try it yourself and lmk!

Starting February 2025, I will solely be practicing out of my Baltimore clinic located in the Cross Keys Quad building in North Central Baltimore City. It’s a bittersweet move as I have always had a part-time practice in Columbia and I have the BEST patients there. Hopefully my Columbia folks will follow me to the city, and if not, I leave them in good hands with all the excellent Columbia acupuncturists. More details are in my recent blog post on my website. This is a big move towards consolidation, finding work-life-family balance, and sending a clear message to the universe that future patients will find me here in my favorite city: 🦀🌈🧡🖤💜 Referrals are love and my website and DMs are open for scheduling!
