Happy Wednesday! Hope everyone is pushing through finals. This will be our last membership spotlight for a while. Today’s spotlight is Kevin Rao! Majoring in Biomedical Engineering, Kevin is originally from Richmond, Virginia and wants to travel to Tokyo, Japan. He decided to join HMR to share discoveries, breakthroughs, and perspectives in the medical field. Kevin has an interest in not only medical technology, but also bioethics. His article “The Obliviousness to Unequal Treatment” directly tackles this. “I was drawn to this topic after hearing about the scandal surrounding my state governor Ralph Northam…wearing a K*K robe in his medical school yearbook,” says Rao. “This made me recall my experience in my biomedical ethics class of taking an implicit bias test on how one implicitly perceives race. I decided to apply my knowledge…to convey the importance of an unbiased physician and what can be done to combat the issue.” To read Kevin’s article, check out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/the-obliviousness-to-unequal-treatment/

Happy Wednesday! Today’s membership spotlight is Julia An! Julia is a sophomore from Nashville, TN majoring in International Studies and Molecular Cellular Biology. Her guilty pleasure is having a pint (or two) of Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream while binging historical drama adaptations of her favorite books. Julia joined HMR because, as an aspiring physician-scientist, she thinks “it is necessary to be aware of and engaged in prevalent and current scientific discourse.” She also wants to hone her communication skills. “I’m excited about an in-progress article in which I talked to JHU lecturer Dr. Benjamin about volunteerism-what it is, its consequences, and how we can avoid it,” says An. “I was drawn to this after discussing the topic in one of Dr. Benjamin’s classes and seeing how widespread it is on college campuses such as Hopkins.” In the meantime, you can read Julia’s other article by checking out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/author/julia-an/

Happy Wednesday! Today’s member spotlight is Min Jae Kim! Min Jae is a sophomore from Fairfax, VA majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience. His favorite memory at Hopkins are spontaneous late-night visits to Korean BBQ and karaoke. Min Jae joined HMR because it was the perfect avenue for him to share his passion about scientific knowledge, whether that be from class or research. Combining his interests, Min Jae wrote the “Diagnosis of Neurological Disorders with Machine Learning Algorithms” to explore the ways in which computational tools can improve precision-care medicine. “By sharing some of the progress made in the field” he says, “I wanted to emphasize how these algorithms can make a semi-automatic diagnosis of neurological disorders in parallel with the judgement made by the clinicians.” To read Min Jae’s article, check out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/diagnosis-of-neurological-disorders-with-machine-learning-algorithms/

Happy Wednesday! Hope everyone is staying safe amidst the current situation. Today’s spotlight post is Meghana Ravi! Meghana is a sophomore from New Albany, OH majoring in Writing Seminars and Molecular and Cellular Biology. She has been a dedicated writer of the Global Health section, and her spirit animal is the dragon. Meghana joined HMR because she wants to translate the rapidly evolving scientific field to everyday language—a mission of HMR. “I think because of this gap [in knowledge], more people are starting to mistrust science because there is not a broad fundamental understanding of it though it’s so critical to our world today. The rise of the anti vax movement” she says, “is an example of this.” In addition to dissemination, Meghana likes to write her stories creatively and poetically. She wrote the “The Cult of the Bleeding Women,” which talks about “how menstruators are indoctrinated into a culture of silence.” To read Meghana’s article, check the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/the-cult-of-the-bleeding-women/

Today’s spotlight post is Michelle Cho! Michelle is a freshman from Irvine, CA majoring in Public Health and Biophysics. This is Michelle’s first year in HMR, and she is very excited to be part of the Domestic Health section and publish her first article!
“Listening to science podcasts like Science Vs or the Naked Scientists and following social media influencers who are super passionate about the general sciences and the state of American health care like Hank Green and John Green have been my source of inspiration to join HMR, so I can develop the same type of media that inspires me to learn and be more engaged in my community.”
We are excited to have you on the HMR team, Michelle!! :)

Happy Wednesday! :)
Today’s member spotlight is Jaanvi Mahesh. Jaanvi is a junior from East Windsor, NJ, majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology and minoring in French. She is involved in SASH and Pi Beta Phi, and volunteers for Believe in Art and at the Sickle Cell Infusion Center at Johns Hopkins. Jaanvi also does pathology research in pancreatic cancer. Her favorite food is tiramisu, because it satisfies both her sweet tooth and coffee cravings!
Jaanvi has always enjoyed writing, even before coming to college, and she wanted to develop her skills as a writer and extend her skills to writing about science.
“My favorite article is about how researchers are using mosquitoes to combat malaria. Basically, these researchers want to release mosquitoes engineered in their labs in parts of Africa to stop the spread of malaria. The way they achieved this was especially fascinating to me, and I recently read that they started to release these mosquitoes into the wild. I’m very interested to see how this project continues and how successful the scientists are.”

Happy Wednesday!!
Today’s spotlight is on Aishwarya Pradeep. Aishwarya is a senior from Bettendorf, Iowa, majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Psychology. She is involved in pain research at the Caterina Lab in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus. Aishwarya is also the co-president of Kranti, the premier South Asian fusion a ca****la group, and the treasurer of Nu Rho Psi, the undergraduate society for Neuroscience. If she could be any animal, she would be a polar bear because of “its stellar hibernation skills (sleep deprivation sucks, don’t do it!)”
Aishwarya joined HMR because she believes that it is her responsibility as a student of research and science to disseminate information and promote awareness within the Hopkins community and beyond. “HMR is the perfect platform that brought me a step closer to making a difference — its comprehensive approach allows writers to explore various facets of health care and write about almost any topic that they are passionate about. This in turn educates readers on health both in and out of the house and how to be the most mindful versions of themselves.”
Her favorite article was when she interviewed the director of pediatric pain management at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center on developing a novel method that combines the traditional approach to treat pain with mental health management techniques, such as CBT, for children with sports-related injuries. “Having witnessed the long-term effects of pain on a patient’s mental health, it was heartwarming to see steps being taken to prevent negative outcomes in patients at such an early age.”

Thanks for all of your hard work, Aishwarya! :)

Happy Tuesday! Today’s spotlight is Keva Li. Keva is a Molecular and Cellular Biology major and Bioethics minor sophomore from Great Neck, NY! She is also a member of Homewood United for Music, MedLife, and SHARE. She volunteers at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Adult Emergency Department, and performs research in the Lab of Mechanics of Bio-Systems (MOB). Her favorite place to visit in Baltimore is the National Aquarium!

Keva joined HMR as a writer for Domestic Health her freshman year. Domestic Health covers a variety of topics, which allows her to unleash her creativity while remaining in the forefront of sharing the newest advances in the medical field! She believes that HMR is a unique platform that allows her to participate in the conversation around medicine and its engagement with a diverse number of fields, such as the humanities and public health.

“After the publication of one of my recent articles about “Lab Grown Meat”, many of my friends who read it brought up the article in our conversations. I decided to write this article after first hearing about it in a class called “Current Events in Biology”, and after conversing with my sister-in-law who is vegan. She remarked that Impossible Burgers taste so much like the real thing. The article touches upon new research about lab grown meat that eliminates many factors such as animal cruelty, greenhouse-gas emissions, bacterial resistance, and other chemicals. Recently, lab grown meat has decreased in price from the original exorbitant price, but it is up to the public to give the last word and overcome the "ick" factor.”

Thanks for all of your hard work, Keva! :)

Happy Thursday! Today’s member spotlight is Isabel Veloso. Isabel is a freshman from Cleveland, OH and Baltimore, MD, and she is intending on majoring in Public Health. She is also a member of the Inter Asian Council and Hopkins Undergrads for Harm Reduction as well. Her favorite memories at Hopkins so far is every time she pets a dog!!
Isabel joined HMR because she believes that it is important to bridge the gap between a “layperson’s” knowledge and the knowledge of doctors and other professionally educated people. “Not being able to understand information makes going to the doctor’s office pretty scary, and it contributes to people not believing in science, so what HMR is doing really adds to both the medical community and the general population.”
Stay tuned for Isabel’s first article in the upcoming cycle -- “I look most forward to writing about how basic science research can apply to real life, because sometimes I feel like what people do in labs seems far away and separate from real life application, but in reality they’re heavily connected!” Have a great day everyone!

Happy Monday everyone!
Today’s member spotlight is Romila Santra. Romila is a sophomore from Overland Park, Kansas double majoring in Neuroscience and Medicine, Science, and the Humanities. She is the co-president and co-founder of Project Finish to Start, a CSC service organization. She plays the violin in the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, and performs research studying autism in the Center for Neurodevelopmental and Imaging Research at Kennedy Krieger. Someday, for her first trip outside of the United States, she would like to go to Calcutta, India, where she can meet all of her extended family in person!
“HMR’s mission really spoke to me: communicating medicine to everyone in an easily comprehensible way. There’s a lot of research that remains confined to the world of scientists because there’s no one to translate the work for the public. I wanted to help break down this communication barrier by writing about issues in medicine that everyone can relate to.”
Her favorite article was a piece that she wrote in April about autism awareness. Romila discusses the side of the autism spectrum where her twin brother fails. “Not everyone realizes the breadth of severity on the spectrum, so I have been wanting to share it for a while, and HMR gave me a platform to do so!”
To read Romila’s article, click here: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/the-april-blues-in-honor-of-autism-awareness-month/
Thank you Romila for all of your hard work!
