We are Hippocrates Medical Review, a student-run medical journal that aims to humanize medicine to make it accessible to those who need the information the most—the patient.

We aim to improve population health by tackling the information gap between patients and providers, and empowering the public with increased healthcare literacy.

Lauren Parker grew up in Richmond, VA before completing her undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University, where she majored in Molecular & Cellular Biology and minored in Spanish. She was a member of the Varsity swim team, and conducted research in the cardiology and functional anatomy departments at the medical campus. After graduation, Lauren worked as a surgical tech in GI/urology at Mercy Medical Center while applying to medical school. She is now a MD-PhD candidate in the MSTP at Duke University. Her clinical/research interests are in pediatric cardiology, genetics, and epigenetic. Outside of academics, Lauren enjoys swimming, yoga, hiking and more recently, rock climbing. Happy Wednesday! Hope everyone is pushing through finals. This will be our last membership spotlight for a while. Today’s spotlight is Kevin Rao! Majoring in Biomedical Engineering, Kevin is originally from Richmond, Virginia and wants to travel to Tokyo, Japan. He decided to join HMR to share discoveries, breakthroughs, and perspectives in the medical field. Kevin has an interest in not only medical technology, but also bioethics. His article “The Obliviousness to Unequal Treatment” directly tackles this. “I was drawn to this topic after hearing about the scandal surrounding my state governor Ralph Northam…wearing a K*K robe in his medical school yearbook,” says Rao. “This made me recall my experience in my biomedical ethics class of taking an implicit bias test on how one implicitly perceives race. I decided to apply my knowledge…to convey the importance of an unbiased physician and what can be done to combat the issue.” To read Kevin’s article, check out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/the-obliviousness-to-unequal-treatment/

Happy Wednesday! Today’s membership spotlight is Julia An! Julia is a sophomore from Nashville, TN majoring in International Studies and Molecular Cellular Biology. Her guilty pleasure is having a pint (or two) of Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream while binging historical drama adaptations of her favorite books. Julia joined HMR because, as an aspiring physician-scientist, she thinks “it is necessary to be aware of and engaged in prevalent and current scientific discourse.” She also wants to hone her communication skills. “I’m excited about an in-progress article in which I talked to JHU lecturer Dr. Benjamin about volunteerism-what it is, its consequences, and how we can avoid it,” says An. “I was drawn to this after discussing the topic in one of Dr. Benjamin’s classes and seeing how widespread it is on college campuses such as Hopkins.” In the meantime, you can read Julia’s other article by checking out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/author/julia-an/

Happy Wednesday! Today’s member spotlight is Sanjana Eranki! Sanjana is a junior from Hillsborough, NJ majoring in Biomedical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics. Her favorite place in Baltimore is Inner Harbor. Sanjana joined HMR to write about topics in global health and share issues around the world that people are unaware of. Her favorite HMR article is “Why India’s Family Planning Policy is Cruel and Eugenic” by Akanksha Suresh. “I thought it was an important topic to discuss” she said, “I was unaware of the policies that exist in some countries until I read her article.” To read Akanksha’s article, check out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/why-indias-family-planning-policy-is-cruel-and-eugenic/

Happy Wednesday! Today’s member spotlight is Min Jae Kim! Min Jae is a sophomore from Fairfax, VA majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience. His favorite memory at Hopkins are spontaneous late-night visits to Korean BBQ and karaoke. Min Jae joined HMR because it was the perfect avenue for him to share his passion about scientific knowledge, whether that be from class or research. Combining his interests, Min Jae wrote the “Diagnosis of Neurological Disorders with Machine Learning Algorithms” to explore the ways in which computational tools can improve precision-care medicine. “By sharing some of the progress made in the field” he says, “I wanted to emphasize how these algorithms can make a semi-automatic diagnosis of neurological disorders in parallel with the judgement made by the clinicians.” To read Min Jae’s article, check out the link below: http://hippocratesmedreview.org/diagnosis-of-neurological-disorders-with-machine-learning-algorithms/
