Meet Our December Student of the Month, Mary Beth!
Mary Beth is one of those bright souls who graces the studio with her inspiring form, delightful spirit and kind presence. Be inspired by her journey in her own words..
My journey into the yoga community came shortly after finishing grad school for the second time. I was looking for something to help ease the stress of the everyday grind and to really find a way to reconnect both my mind and body. I spent several years hopping between classes at various gyms including vinyasa, hatha, and yen yoga. I dabbled in bikram/hot yoga a couple times, but it never really stuck.
It wasn’t until my now husband, reached his 10th year of practicing bikram, that I decided to support him by joining in a more consistent hot yoga practice. After 1 month of consistent hot yoga, I fell in love and now cannot live without it. Like most yogis my adventures into the hot room started as a love-hate relationship, but once I started completing 2-3 classes per week I began to feel the amazing benefits in my body, mind, and spirit. I would leave class feeling exhausted and drained, then 2-3 hours later I would get a sense of mental calm and body stilling that last for the next 2-3 days.
I love how this yoga focuses on form and function, not depth of postures. As a dancer through my college years, I always had flexibility and some hyper-mobility, but as I started to age I found my joints were lacking in alignment and stability. My hips were askew and causing pain, my knees clicked when I climbed stairs, and my neck/upper shoulders were always tense. Each class I am able to focus on where my body enters the yoga room that day, accept this starting point, focus solely on personal growth, and allow my body and mind to get back into sync. The feedback from the highly skilled instructors at HYB is essential to this process. They teach will a knowledge of human anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology. They get to know their students to facilitate growth in all aspects of their yoga practice, which allows them to gently nudge each student’s practice just past the point of where we think we are capable of going.
The vibe of this yoga studio is so different from everywhere else I’ve been, we have such a diverse community of people of so many different backgrounds, skill levels, ages, and personality types. Plus we get the added benefit of supporting a local small woman-owned business in our community. As small business owner myself this is something that’s incredibly important to me. For these and many other reasons, I cannot imagine calling anywhere else my yoga home."
