🎉 Last year’s Henrietta Lacks Memorial Award went to the groundbreaking “Voices in My Head” Youth Mental Health Project! Led by youth themselves, New Song Community Learning Center, in collaboration with JHUSOURCE, is using the $15,000 award to turn the self-help book Trauma to Triumph into a mobile app.

“Only the youth know the youth… only we can connect, learn, and grow from people who are like us,” shares student-author Tajae Holloway.💙

In 2020, The Granny Project, a youth-led initiative addressing food insecurity among teens, was honored for its innovative, community-rooted approach. Led by youth from HeartSmiles in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Center for Adolescent Health, the project exemplified what’s possible when lived experience drives solutions. That year marked both the 10th anniversary of the Award and a decade of deep community impact. Now, five years later, HeartSmiles is celebrating 10 years of uplifting and empowering Baltimore youth. ❤️

We’re proud to uplift our 2018 , Larry Simmons, for his powerful op-ed published this week in Maryland Matters: “Baltimore’s young people deserve better: Let’s fund and trust community-rooted youth programs.” 🙌
