It has been a while since there has been a post. 2020 certainly provided for a bit of a distraction. Despite the tremendous healthcare challenges for our patients and those caring for them, real professional excellence was demonstrated at every turn.
UMMC Respiratory Care is proud to celebrate the 2021-2023 AARC APEX designation. Being only one of 13 acute care hospitals across the nation to be awarded the honor, UMMC is standing out as being on the cutting edge and for role modeling professional excellence.

Congratulations to the UMMC Respiratory Team for their dedication and selfless charge toward the needs of their patients!

Hello everyone, This is in follow up to an email that was sent to all registered attendees via Eventbrite....

It is very sad to have to communicate this news, Amidst the rapidly evolving COVID-19 crisis, there has been a push to cancel events that draw large gatherings together. Many healthcare facilities are issuing prohibiting statements and are cancelling or postponing conference attendance and travel. UMMS has decided that we must do the same. The safety of the general population and for us, our healthcare staff is critical. Though we are discouraged with this decision, we also understand that we have a responsibility as an academic medical center to carry on our mission to provide education. With 2020 representing a license renewal year for Maryland respiratory therapists, we are going to use these last two weeks prior to March 20th to convert the program to a live webinar. We will work with our scheduled speakers to make this happen! This would have been our 8th annual event at UMMC and we are very proud to have grown the program to the quality many of you experienced over the past many years. Key note speaker Dr. Dean Hess is under the same conference travel restrictions and is on board with the webinar option. The UMMC Respiratory Care Symposium Committee will be working tirelessly to set up a GoTo meeting webinar that will present each speaker in a voice over PowerPoint format. We will utilize the same speaker agenda with only one modification to allow for a change in GoTo meeting programs for the afternoon breakout sessions. With the resources coming together to make this happen, we are confident that the program will still be a great learning experience and that CEUs will still arrive on time. Thank you for your understanding and for all that you are doing to support our Maryland healthcare facilities during this worldwide health concern. Please stay connected to your email communication from UMMC and Eventbrite for detailed log on instructions through next week. For those who could not participate due to an inability to attend the conference in person, this may be an opportunity for you to now gain CEUs from the comfort of your own home! Registration for the event will remain open to the morning of March 20th. Stay safe everyone! Most Sincerely, Chris Kircher

❤️HAPPY RESPIRATORY CARE WEEK❤️
What is a Respiratory Therapist?
We respond to every Code Blue, Rapid Response, Trauma and High Risk Delivery.
We work in every area of the hospital...ER, ICU, CCU, NICU, PICU, FLOORS and you probably thought we were your nurse.
We work side by side with Nurses and Physicians.
We take care of adults, your children and your premature babies.
We draw arterial blood and we analyze it.
We insert arterial lines to monitor your blood pressure continuously.
We intubate you. We extubate you.
We put you on Mechanical Ventilators and breathe for you when you can't breathe on your own.
We clean your airways orally, tracheally and nasally.
We exercise your lungs and keep them clean with Bronchial Hygiene Therapy.
We monitor your sleep.
We monitor your pulmonary function.
We give you medicine to open your airways when they are closing on you.
We give you mixed gases to help you oxygenate when your body is getting tired.

We hold your hand when you are scared and share comforting words. Many times we are the last ones to leave your room. We educate you on diseases like OSA, COPD, ASTHMA, etc.

We are a 365/24/7 operation and we are a critical part of the medical team that takes care of you.

So if you didn't know, now you do!!! Hug a Respiratory Therapist today :-)
