Our Mission Statement:

SOMOS is Baltimore City College’s minority student organization & was founded in May 2014. The word “somos” means “we are” in Spanish which signifies that every member lays down their personal experience to help build our missions. We are a multicultural group that welcomes all ethnicities, races, and sexualities. SOMOS tackles systemic issues of injustice in schools, the

Baltimore community, and the nation through activism, solidarity with other partners, and raising awareness of students' rights.

SOMOS got First Aid and CPR, AED trained tonight in preparation for our Intercambio program that begins Sept 30th. Students will be teaching English and Spanish to City parents and teachers and offer free child care!

While we plan on having a crisis free program, it is important to always be prepared!

Yesterday, SOMOS went to Annapolis, MD to meet 1-on-1 with 12 Baltimore state senators and delegates. They advocated on behalf of issues such as: making college more affordable, investing in public over private K-12 schools, greater access to healthy food in communities that lack options, better quality nutrition in school lunches, equitable class credits for ESOL students at the college level, improved pay for para educators, and more!

We are very excited to announce that for a long time, our SOMOS organizers have worked hard on a documentary that rises the voice of our ESOL students throughout Baltimore who constantly face the struggles of not being fluent English speakers and are impacted through their academics, SOMOs showed up to the LOUD-N-CLEAR film festival as well as SAUL ZAENTZ HIGHSCHOOL FILM FESTIVAL was SOMOS won an award for achievement in the category of advocacy with this new documentary!!
As we end the school year and say goodbye to our senior organizers, we want to share with you all how proud we are of every single project we have accomplished together, including this one that we believe is a great step to recognizing the struggles that all out ESOL students face and are not given the right tools to succeed, once more we are moving one step closer to an actual change in and our education system.

To our seniors' organizers:
Blanca, Margaret, Oswaldo, Cheyene, Norma, Liernelis, Camila, Tristan, and Juan we are extremely proud of all of you and all the work you all have accomplished, we are sure that this is just the beginning of the amazing things you will all keep doing, thank you for all the work you all have done for your community you have all left a huge legacy behind that will let our next SOMOS organizers keep building and make us all proud, we can’t wait to see all the great the things the future holds for every single one of you.
