Yesterday, we unveiled the renderings of what The Bloom Collective is building with . We are grateful to be in this intentional and lovely partnership with Catina Smith and Kiah Gibian. As the last day of Black Maternal Health Week is upon us, we want to share with you what we are trying to build collaboratively. Bloom is going to be expanding into Our Time, and we believe this is a critical step in expanding perinatal health and reproductive justice in Greater Baltimore. We know we are only one of many folks committed to this work. Please take a look at what we plan to do, and if you feel so inclined, we invite you to join us by making donations/pledges and feel free to spread with your networks.

Last year, signed a state Proclamation to honor ! We know there is something much work to do in our state to truly honor holistic care and reproductive justice, but we do it piece by piece with intentionality and collaboration that leads to liberated futures. We want to honor the heart work of Delegate Jennifer White Holland Delegate Jheanelle Wilkins and the entire Maryland Legislative Black Caucus for their unwavering commitment to Black Maternal Health. This work is about our communities and doing what is necessary to ensure reproductive justice is actualized.

Last year, we were honored to work with for her soft gather installation. We discussed the intentions of our work at Bloom along with aliana's deep intentionality and hand woven pieces to curate space to be, to heal and to gather. The Soft Gather space is inspired by being held, circular process of life, connection to the land, the earth’s nourishment, and honoring of the grand midwives.

Installed during Black Maternal Health Week 2024, Soft Gather was an accessible healing space open to the Bloom community. Through the colors and textures, it is a restful, beautiful experience that aligns with how they want their community to feel—light and at peace. People gather and build community through conversation, rest, play, and release. Soft Gather provides the space for them to do these things in a new, comfortable, and inspiring way. You can view aspects of Soft Gather by checking out new art installation

On April 10th, In recognition of Black Maternal Health Week 2025, the Black Maternal Health Federal Policy Collective hosted a Congressional briefing on the state of maternal health in the United States and policy opportunities for improvements.

We explored how collaborative efforts between states, federal agencies, and community organizations can effectively implement meaningful policy changes. We also discussed how joy, connection and radical care, and honesty will get us through. We were honored to be part of the Congressional Briefing alongside Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Lauren Underwood and Senator Cory Booker. Our own Director was a panelist alongside the moderator Elizabeth Dawes, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, and Anais Washington.

change, and community engagement, BMHW25 highlights the power of Black-led perinatal, maternal, and reproductive health organizations in driving systemic change and fostering community healing. This week highlights the necessity of collaboration, policy change, and community-based solutions to advance Black maternal health equity and justice.

You know what time it is! Happy Black Maternal Health Week! Today starts , and you know we always start the week with the BMHW Proclamation! In 2021, we got one from to honor the intentional work happening in Baltimore. We have received a Proclamation since the start of Black Maternal Health Week in 2018! As one of the co-founders of BMHW with all of our partners, we like start the week this way to center the collective work we all do in our locales that makes a ripple effect for transformative change. We also want to amplify for putting forth Black Maternal Health as a priority for Baltimore City Council just this week.

This years theme, "Healing Legacies: Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action and Advocacy" Is an opportunity to locate ourselves as part of a continuum of folks who care about holistic care and reproductive justice, and we must find ways to ensure collaboration that leads to liberation. We thank everyone for how they amplify and celebrate this week. When we co-founded this week in 2017, the goal was always to celebrate joy and the work in our communities while collaborating for national policy changes. We hope you learn about all the BMMA partners and the people in their own communities who are Black led and accountable and community centered, making a difference in Black maternal/perinatal health and reproductive justice

Let us know: How does the theme resonate with you? What are you doing to celebrate and honor Black Maternal Health Week? Or put a 💜 if you are attending any events happening in your area or virtually?

The Bloom Collective

The Bloom Collective is a collaboration of maternal and birthing persons health and wellness practitioners. Our intent for coming together and building a space in the community is based on our collective vision of providing a nurturing, supportive and empowering space for women and families. We believe that if mothers, during the perinatal period and along the parenthood journey, are provided with a safe space to be their most whole selves, we will manifest the strength and sustainability that will empower our children, families and communities.

Each one of us brings various expertise, gifts and talents to the Bloom Collective. We are all rooted in the values of reproductive justice, birth justice, human rights, holistic health care and wellness, and the belief that a family can bloom and thrive with the support of a nurturing village. Together, we bring 30 years of experience around centering Black Maternal & Birthing Persons Health on the local, national and international levels working in our communities on interpersonal and systemic levels. We build community with great intentionality, serve birthing persons and their families, while working as advocates and organizers on state and federal policy issues on Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice.
