🥼Virginia Apgar was a groundbreaking physician who transformed newborn care around the world.

Born in 1909, Dr. Apgar became one of the first women to specialize in anesthesiology at a time when very few women were physicians. She worked at Columbia University and focused on improving the safety of mothers and babies during childbirth.

In 1952, she created what is now known as the Apgar Score — a quick assessment used immediately after birth to evaluate how well a newborn is adjusting outside the womb. The score is performed at 1 minute and 5 minutes after delivery and checks five areas:

🩶Appearance (skin color)
🩶Pulse (heart rate)
🩶Grimace (reflex response)
🩶Activity (muscle tone)
🩶Respiration (breathing effort)

Each category receives a score from 0–2, for a total possible score of 10.

The Apgar Score quickly became a worldwide standard because it helped healthcare providers identify babies needing urgent medical attention within moments of birth. It dramatically improved communication and response in delivery rooms and is still used today in hospitals across the globe.

Beyond the Apgar Score, Dr. Apgar also:

🎀Advocated for maternal and infant health
🎀Raised awareness about birth defects and prenatal care
🎀Worked with organizations supporting newborn health research
🎀Became a leading voice for safer obstetric anesthesia

🩺She was known for being brilliant, energetic, and deeply committed to improving outcomes for mothers and babies. Her work helped lay the foundation for modern neonatal care and changed the way newborns are assessed forever.

PCOS is now being referred to as PMOS, a name that better reflects the condition’s connection to metabolic health, insulin resistance, and overall wellness. While the name has changed, the importance of awareness, education, and individualized care remains the same. Meet Mary Papanicolaou — Georgios Papanicolaou’s wife and the woman who helped shape one of the most important breakthroughs in women’s health. 💜

During the development of the Pap smear, Mary underwent daily Pap tests for years so cervical cells could be collected and studied as part of Georgios’ research. Her dedication and willingness to support the work played a vital role in the development of a screening test that would go on to save millions of lives through the early detection of cervical cancer. 🔬
