Who else needs a reset?

I ate 4 cheeseburgers with fries in the course of 6 days. I returned home from vacation with a (new) sourdough starter and have been eating bagels and bread way more than I normally do. Yet neither of these are the reason why I need a reset.

I need a reset because I FEEL off.

My tongue is sore and puffy. My thinking fuzzy. I’m not able to fall back to sleep when I wake at night. I’m experiencing a tightness in my upper abdomen and a sense of urgency even though there’s no crisis in my life. I’ve been constipated. My appetite is erratic. Energy levels are low (in a season when I’m usually feeling quite inspired).

Fear not, I’ve been here - feeling out of balance - many times before and I know how to get back on track.

The reset I need isn’t anything drastic; our bodies are designed for healing with even simple tweaks. For me, it’s about returning to the seasonal foods, herbs and practices that I know nourish and ground me in Autumn. Those things that poise me to be present with myself (emotions) and for all of the goodness in my life.

Renewal: The Autumn Session begins on October 2nd. If you are also in need of a mindbody reset, take a look at the link in the comments below.

Would love for you to join me.

This week in the treatment room, I’ve heard from each patient - in varied ways - how the seasonal transition is effecting them. From sleep disruption, to considerably lower energy, to susceptibility to flus, lingering covid symptoms, heightened anxiety and digestive upset.

The transition from summer to autumn is a precipitous one; and particularly difficult on our beings.

As a yin season, you need more rest. Re-prioritize your sleep routine after the late nights of summer. Get to bed - eyes closed, devices off - no later than 11pm. Make sure you are getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night to nourish your kidneys & adrenals.

The climate of autumn is dry; include more moistening foods in your diet. The associated organ systems of this season are the lungs & large intestine. These organs require a moist environment to function optimally. Include root veggies like sweet potatoes, squashes, pumpkins, stewed apples and pears, sautéed spinach, black sesame seeds, chia seeds, almonds and h**p hearts. Soups, stews and porridges are wonderful as they support good digestion and bring much needed hydration to your body.

Moon is waxing. Sun is waning. Autumn is quietly moving through the woods: drifting in through screen doors and open windows, spreading out across the house like incense; whispering into our innermost ears that it is time, once again, to begin.drawing our energy inwards.

This week in the treatment room, I’ve heard from each patient - in varied ways - how the seasonal transition is effecting them. From sleep disruption, to considerably lower energy, to susceptibility to flus, lingering covid symptoms, heightened anxiety and digestive disruption.

Oh friends, it’s happening 🍁. I know it’s early but it is upon us. 🙏

On the 24 Solar Nodes calendar, the two week period known as ‘Autumn Begins’ arrived on August 6th. The descent into the dark half of the year is upon us and this human being is oh, so delighted.

I experience an internal expansion as summer begins to fade. It’s as if my whole being exhales a sigh of relief.

And while I know I’m not alone in relishing the yin half of the year, there are so many folks who experience heightened anxiety, dread, fear, chronic illness and depression as daylight decreases and the natural world prepares for death (winter).

Where are you on the spectrum of LOVING to DREADING the turn towards the cooler, darker months?

While it’s still early in the transition from summer (utmost yang) to autumn (lesser yin) you may already be experiencing subtle shifts within your being. You are, after all, nature, ever influenced by the subtle shifts of the natural world.

In Chinese cosmology, the season of autumn corresponds to the metal element. The related The related organ systems are the lungs and large intestine. The emotion is grief. The sensory or***ce is the nose. And the health of the metal element expresses through the skin.

In the Northern Hemisphere we are experiencing late summer, a fifth season in Chinese cosmology. Late summer is the still and humid bridge that carries us from summer to autumn.

It is a time of great energetic transition in the natural world and within our bodies. The yang energy - bright, dynamic, active - is yielding to the cooler, receptive and more inward focused energies of the yin principle.

The season of late summer corresponds to the Earth element in 5 element tradition of Chinese Medicine. The related themes are home, harvest, thoughtfulness, touch, nourishment and the archetypal loving mother (guardian).

The organ systems that correspond to the Earth element are the stomach and spleen/pancreas. In Chinese Medicine this dynamic duo is responsible for the production of post natal qi, blood and fluids. Put another way, these organ systems are responsible for digesting, assimilating and transforming everything that you consume.

Everything!

From food, to emotions, environment, experiences, conversations (arguments), Netflix, podcasts, the NEWS, books, etc. . It’s no wonder so many people are experiencing some expression of digestive disharmony:

⭐️acid reflux
⭐️anemia
⭐️bloating
⭐️chronic constipation
⭐️disordered eating
⭐️depression
⭐️excessive belching (rebellious stomach qi)
⭐️fatigue
⭐️insatiable hunger
⭐️lack of appetite
⭐️lack of passion (appetite for life)
⭐️lethargy after eating
⭐️obsession/compulsion
⭐️recurring sinus infections
⭐️recurring yeast infections
⭐️worry

And you, how are you digesting life?

✨Do you feel nourished by (your) life?
✨Do you have enough sweetness - comfort, steadiness and thoughtfulness - in your life?
✨Do you feel grounded and vital in the earth of your body?
✨Are you able to drop into a restorative sleep at night?
✨Do you feel refreshed upon waking?

Martha Artemis Rogers, L.Ac.

I am an acupuncturist, educator & creative. I treat the whole person, roots and branches. Roots being the underlying cause of the disharmony and branches being the apparent symptoms. People come to me for a variety of reasons ranging from feeling off-balance to chronic anxiety to migraines to low back pain to support moving through the grieving process after the death of a loved one. Chinese Medicine stimulates the innate healing mechanism in the body; awakens spaciousness of mind; and fosters the flowering of one’s spirit. It is potent medicine for all phases of life.

While working one on one is deeply fulfilling another part of my calling is to foster healing & connection in community. To honor this, I offer sacred rituals around the phases of the moon. These sessions include attunements of essential oils and crystals; gentle yoga; harmonizing acupuncture treatment; and a candle-lit blessing meditation. Additionally, I offer seasonal cleanses to help people reconnect with the wisdom of their bodies; attune to the rhythms of nature; and remember how good they feel when eating seasonal, whole foods.

In addition to my private practice, I am adjunct faculty at Maryland University of Integrative Health where I have been teaching in the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine program since 2009. In my free time I enjoy puttering in the yarden; writing; communing with nature; and spending time with family and friends.

I look forward to working together on your wellness journey.
