📚 Resident Journal Club – December Edition

This month, our residents explored two impactful rehabilitation research articles:

Dr. Demelio Urbano (PM&R Resident) presented a randomized cross-over trial comparing TENS vs. FES for managing spasticity in individuals with spinal cord injury.

Dr. Jessica Liu (Neuro PT Resident) presented a non-inferiority study investigating whether virtual reality–based vestibular rehab can match conventional multisensory balance training.

Another month of thoughtful discussion and evidence-based learning! 👏✨

🎉 We’re excited to be featured in the December edition of The Bridge!
This month highlights our case study with Ross Holland, a bilateral amputee who discovered that reversing his prosthetic legs dramatically improved his balance, comfort, and mobility. 🦾💙

Our ABBEL team conducted a first-of-its-kind gait analysis to understand why this innovative adjustment worked — offering new insight that may benefit other amputees in the future.

📘 Ever wondered what makes scientific articles so reliable?
Most undergo peer review, meaning multiple experts examine the work before it’s published—something many textbooks don’t require.

📚 This month, PGY-3 Physiatry Resident Dr. Katerina Havlik led our Journal Club!

We discussed “Factors Influencing Active Participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Patients with Cardiovascular Disease: A Nationwide Cohort” The study revealed that cardiac rehabilitation (CR) participation remains low, especially among women, older adults, rural residents, and patients with multiple comorbidities like diabetes or musculoskeletal pain.

💡 These findings highlight the need for more accessible, tailored CR programs so the patients who need it most can truly benefit.

👏 Great job, Dr. Havlik, for leading such an impactful conversation!
