Congratulations to our BPPV team on receiving $27,601.49 in funding through the Maryland Health Care Commission FY2026 Trauma Grant!

Focused on reducing fall-related injuries in adults 60+, this initiative aims to identify and treat BPPV early, improve mobility and safety, and reduce avoidable hospital visits.

Proud to support a team advancing research and care for older adults!

Behind the Scenes: WBAL Interview

We welcomed Breana Ross and the crew from WBAL-TV 11 News into our lab to highlight our Infant Norms project and the importance of early motor development research.

This opportunity not only allowed us to showcase the technology and purpose behind the study, but also helps us reach more Baltimore families. Increasing participation is essential as we work to build strong, representative norms for infant sitting balance and improve early recognition of motor differences.

Grateful to share this work with our community โ€” and excited to welcome more little ones to the lab!

๐Ÿ“š Resident Journal Club โ€“ March

This month, our residents reviewed a study examining the relationship between gabapentin prescriptions and cognitive outcomes in adults with chronic low back pain.

Gaurav Majmudar, PGY-4 resident, led a discussion on this retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX US Collaborative Network database. After propensity score matching, researchers analyzed over 26,000 patients with chronic low back pain to evaluate the incidence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment within 10 years of diagnosis.

The study found that patients prescribed gabapentin had a higher incidence of both dementia and mild cognitive impairment compared with those not prescribed the medication. Risk was particularly elevated in non-elderly adults and increased with greater prescription frequency.

An important discussion on how large health data networks and longitudinal research can inform safer prescribing and improve long-term patient care.

A look back at the Association of Academic Physiatrists Annual Meeting 2026 in San Juan, Puerto Rico!

Our team had an incredible week sharing research, connecting with colleagues from across the field, and celebrating the exciting work happening in physiatry and rehabilitation science.

Between poster sessions and presentations, we also had the chance to enjoy the beautiful sights of San Juan, making this yearโ€™s meeting one to remember.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our posters and joined the conversation!

EXCITING NEWS - ABBEL Research was featured on WBAL-TV this week! ๐ŸŽฅ

Watch the segment to learn more about our infant motor development study led by Dr. Jordan Wickstrom, PhD, in the ABBEL Research Division of the Rehabilitation Institute at Sinai Hospital. This study examines how infants control their balance during the development of sitting and will help clinicians identify early signs of developmental delays.

Your baby may be eligible if they:
๐Ÿ‘ถ Are under 10 months old
๐Ÿ‘ถ Can sit independently for at least 10 seconds
๐Ÿ‘ถ Have no known diagnoses

During the visit, infants sit on special mats and force plates that help researchers measure posture and movement in a safe, non-invasive way.

Families receive gift cards and parking validation for participating.

๐ŸŽ‰ Congratulations to Dr. Yomiyou Geleta on being invited to deliver an oral presentation at the 2026 American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting!

His project, โ€œSkin Complications Following Non-operative Humeral Fractureโ€”Older Adult After a Fall-related Injury,โ€ has been selected for presentation on May 28, 2026, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Kudos to all co-authors on this important work. Weโ€™re proud to see this research recognized and look forward to Dr. Geleta sharing his insights!

๐Ÿ“š Resident Journal Club โ€“ February

This month, our residents reviewed the MRC CRASH trial published by The Lancet:

Matthew Bankert, PGY-3 resident, led a discussion on this international randomized controlled trial examining the use of intravenous corticosteroids in adults with clinically significant traumatic brain injury. Spanning more than 200 hospitals across 49 countries and enrolling over 18,000 patients, the study evaluated mortality within 14 days and disability outcomes at six months.

The findings showed a higher risk of death within two weeks in the corticosteroid group compared to placebo, with no improvement in long term disability. The results challenged prior assumptions of corticosteroids and shifted clinical practice away from usage in acute head injury management.

An important conversation on how global collaboration, trial design, and evidence shapes patient care.

Our 2025 Research Productivity reflects more than metrics โ€” it represents meaningful collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to advancing rehabilitation care.

This work would not be possible without the dedication of our interdisciplinary collaborators across residents, researchers, attendings, therapists, and partners who contribute their expertise and passion to every project.

Iโ€™m incredibly proud of our RIS team and the collective effort that continues to move our field forward.

Huge congratulations to Josannah Rosario, PT, DPT on presenting at the 2026 CSM Annual Meeting! ๐ŸŽ‰

Josannah shared her work titled:
โ€œEffectiveness of High-Intensity Gait Training with Virtual Reality for Cerebellar and Pontine Stroke Recovery: A Case Series.โ€

This project was completed during her time as a Neuro PT Resident with RIS and reflects her commitment to advancing evidence-based neurorehabilitation. Now serving as a valued PT staff member, Josannah continues to bring the same dedication to clinical excellence and innovation in stroke recovery.

Weโ€™re so proud to see her scholarship and hard work recognized on a national stage! ๐Ÿ‘
