self-quarantine is a great time to implement changes in your lifestyle habits :)
you've probably used a in the shower - but they're even better in the kitchen! I use my all-natural loofah , cut into small, circular pieces, as my all-purpose dish sponge, and i LOVE it. here's why:
1. it grew from the ! wait... what even is a loofah? loofah, or , is the fibrous structure of a tropical fruit related to the cucumber. the fruit is edible in it's earlier days, but as it ripens it becomes very tough and fibrous. when allowed to fully ripen, dry out, and then be stripped of it's exterior skin, we're left with the loofah you're familiar with - no manufacturing, processing, or modifications necessary :)
2. it never smells bad. the loofah softens when wet, and holds soapy water well, but it also dries quickly and doesn't create conditions for bacterial growth. I use mine for months and they never stink!
3. it's super affordable - you can buy a full loofah online for less than $10 and you may be able to find it for even less at a local international market. depending on the size of your loofah, you may cut it into 10-20 small dish sponges. that will easily last you a full year or more!
4. it's ! when I'm done with a sponge (each one lasts me a few months) I simply throw it in the - it's no tougher to decompose than a regular fibrous vegetable.
5. it's tough but non-abrasive, so it won't scratch delicate surfaces or coatings. the loofah fibers are firm and textured - great for scrubbing hardened food, pans, & even cast iron - but they soften when wet and will never scratch.
