Before he was born, Brooks’ parents knew he would be a fighter. Born with a critical heart defect, he required emergency care from his very first breath. After a life-saving heart procedure and months in the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Brooks’ family was finally able to bring their tiny warrior home.

"After seeing how closely the PICU staff cared for our son 24/7, we were able to rest at night knowing who was caring for him while we could not. To this day, we know we chose the right place for our son’s care and are reminded every day that we get to see his face," shared Brooks’ parents after reflecting on his months-long hospital stay.

The Chip in for Children golf outing on October 17th raises funds to support the families and patients in need in the PICU. Reserve your spot today or learn more by visiting: https://birdease.com/MDchipinforchildren

The Children’s Heart Program (CHP) has launched a meaningful project to support pediatric cardiology patients and their families facing food insecurity.
Families in need are identified and connected with the Community Health Improvement team at University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus, who, through a simple screening process, provide non-perishable food items.
So far, more than 100 bags of food have been distributed — helping ensure children receive the medical care they need for their hearts and the nourishment they need to thrive.
👏 Thank you to our CHP and Community Health Improvement teams for extending care beyond the bedside and making a difference in families' lives.

September is , and at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, we are dedicated to supporting our young oncology patients with compassionate, expert-led care.
Our Child Life team helps children understand and cope with their diagnoses through hands-on teaching tools and story-based learning. One example is the Chemo Duck, which has a central line like many of our patients. Children can use real medical equipment to practice medical play while learning through books.
For sickle cell education, the child life team uses a clear tube to represent a vein. By dropping in healthy round red cells and sickled cells, children see how “traffic jams” block blood flow, cause pain, and affect the body. This teaching is paired with to help children and families better understand the condition.
At UMCH, we go beyond treatment. We help children and families understand, learn, and find comfort along the way.
