Why would someone leave Silicon Valley for nursing?

Miguel Bustos Bismonte didn’t walk away from innovation—he followed it somewhere deeper.

Drawn to the intersection of science, systems thinking, and human connection, Miguel saw nursing as the next frontier for real-world impact. Today, as a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, he applies the same analytical mindset once used in high-tech spaces to the complex realities of health care.

Featured on the On The Pulse podcast, Miguel shares how nurses are expanding the boundaries of innovation—and shaping the future of care in ways that truly matter.

🎧 Listen in and rethink what innovation really looks like.
If you’ve ever questioned where your skills could make the greatest impact, this story is for you. https://nursing.jhu.edu/magazine/podcasts/archive/episode-54-why-one-graduate-chose-nursing-over-silicon-valley/

🎙️ New Episode of The Resilient Nurse Podcast is live!

In this powerful episode, Dr. Cynda Rushton sits down with Dr. Theresa Di Seta, Assistant Director of Student Placements at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, for a thoughtful conversation about the individual and collective power of nursing’s voice in health care today.

Together, they explore why advocacy and community engagement are essential to driving positive change, and how nurses shape health care environments while supporting the well-being of their colleagues and communities. Theresa, a self-proclaimed introvert, shares her personal journey to finding her voice, breaks down the ABCs of advocacy, and reflects on the incredible impact that followed once she chose to speak up.

This episode is a reminder that advocacy doesn’t require a megaphone—just intention, courage, and connection.

In South Africa, a Hopkins-led study is transforming how the world thinks about drug-resistant tuberculosis care. The trial proved that nurses can deliver treatment with outcomes equivalent to those of physicians—findings that have already shaped South Africa’s national guidelines and global health practice.

For one Johns Hopkins Nursing PhD student working on the project, the research is more than data, it’s a proof of what’s possible when nursing leads systems-level change. Their work reflects the foresight driving the next generation of nurse scientists: turning evidence into policy and reimagining how care is delivered worldwide.

Read Adam's story:

When Adam Leonard boarded a plane to South Africa, he knew he was heading into unfamiliar territory. He had spent more than a decade working in San Francisco, caring for young people navigating homelessness, substance use, and HIV. His clinical world was grounded in community health programs such a...

Foresight: A groundbreaking step in violence prevention, the Danger Assessment tool is now policy across U.S. Veterans Affairs hospitals and is expanding into Department of Defense settings worldwide. This marks the first nationwide integration of domestic violence risk assessment into federal health systems, ensuring that survivors’ safety is systematically recognized and addressed.

Born from decades of nursing research, the tool’s adoption demonstrates the power of foresight—how evidence-based innovation can shape national policy and save lives on a global scale.
