World Transplant Day, observed annually on June 6th, is a day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the lives saved and improved through organ and tissue transplantation.

It's a time to honor donors, their families, and the recipients who benefit from this life-saving medical procedure. The day also serves as a reminder of the urgent need for more organ donors to meet the global demand.

Inside 7-year-old Saleh Ahmad’s chest beats a heart donated by 4-year-old Myles Godfrey, who was killed in a car crash two years ago. Myles’ mother, Kaci Wilson, invited Saleh and his family to her wedding in Georgia over the weekend. The families met in person for the first time before the ceremony, and Wilson listened to Saleh’s heartbeat with a stethoscope.

Two families are united by one heartbeat after a transplant from one mother's son to another.

Hannah Fleming received a liver transplant at 8 months old due to biliary atresia. Now, as a nurse on the Cleveland Clinic transplant team, she advocates for organ donation. "I really do just want to advocate for organ donation with any opportunity I can and live life to honor my donor in any way that I can because I wouldn’t be here today without them," she says.

“I had a liver transplant when I was 8 months old, so National Donor Day is a pretty important day for me.”
