This Sunday, August 31, is marked each year as International Overdose Awareness Day, a call for the global community to come together and take action on overdose.

Chase Brexton was recently certified as an Overdose Response Program by the Maryland Department of Health. As a certified program, we're able to provide training both for staff and the community on how to recognize and respond to an individual experiencing an opioid overdose, as well as distribute the lifesaving medication naloxone (Narcan) to use in the event of an opioid overdose. If you're interested in receiving this training, ask your Chase Brexton provider for more information.

We also offer our STEP Clinic, which is all about making recovery from opiates possible by offering the support and the medication assistance to make leaving substance use behind easier. Learn more at www.chasebrexton.org/STEP.

Overdose is preventable - when we act.

We recently welcomed two new nurse practitioner fellows: Sashamara Perez DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC, MMS, AE-C and Adriana Soria-Hawkinson DNP, CRNP! Sashamara and Adriana will see patients at Mt. Vernon Center and will receive additional specialty training in HIV, gender affirming care and LGBTQ+ medicine.

Sashamara says: "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to complete a post-graduate training program at Chase Brexton. Chase Brexton seeks to help the most vulnerable, and as a new provider, I seek to build upon my clinical skills while exploring my areas of interest within harm reduction and LGBTQ health. As a native Spanish speaker, I am also hoping to help address the care needs of our growing Latinx community!"

Adriana says: "I have always had a passion for caring for patients from different backgrounds, ages, and stages of life. Chase Brexton really stood out to me as a place to work because of its strong commitment to inclusive, patient-centered care. I know I can add to Chase Brexton's mission by always making sure patients feel understood and supported no matter what they're going through."

Join us in celebrating National Community Health Worker Week! Aug 25- Aug 29!
Chase Brexton recognizes the important contributions Community Health Workers (CHWs) make each day for our clients. Through outreach, advocacy, education, or linking clients to medical and social resources, CHWs at Chase Brexton contribute as trusted members of our multi-disciplinary care teams!
The crucial role of CHWs here in Maryland has been reinforced through the Community Health Worker Act, enacted in 2018, which provides a pathway to professional CHW certification with the Maryland Department of Health. The certification process involves 100 hours of didactic training across nine core competencies, along with 40 hours of supervised field work culminating in a comprehensive assessment.
This year all 7 members of the Population Health Care Navigator team are working to complete this rigorous CHW certification process. They join others across the organization who have already done so in SWOD, Population Health, and beyond.

Happy National Community Health Worker Week to all our incredible staff!
