I'm a follower of Lee Harris, who speaks with the Zs, and he does monthly energy updates. Occasional things will pop up on my YouTube or my socials with him in it. And recently, he was talking about activation of our nervous system in ways that are heightening the experience or maybe causing us to need more sleep. Um, but I am definitely in the camp of feeling extraordinary activation, uncomfortable, and chaotic nervous system activation.
For me, I am actually going through, for those who follow astrology, Uranus has been waffling around my zero degree Gemini sun, and it's been a rough summer. I have been utilizing hormone replacement therapy as I navigate perimenopause, and I'm about seven months into this journey and finding that there's a very real possibility that I have an intolerance to progesterone, which 10, at least 10% of women who try progesterone end up finding that they're intolerant to it.
Which explains a lot of things from my past, but it has made for quite a- a terrible emotional, chaotic summer and trialing of a therapy that is very useful for women, but apparently not so much for me. And it's kind of disappointing, but it has been a rough couple of months here dealing with it. And one of the things that I found myself getting back to was a practice of centering myself, and I will literally focus on the center of my body, my gut.
It has always been a place of centering for me to focus on that middle chakra . And connecting with it by breathing, which I explained in the video. But it was through somatic therapy and getting to know somatic therapy in the past few years that I got to know sort of the science behind why that's sort of a central focus for me, and then getting to know more about the possibility of neurodivergence as an additional thing I've been learning about myself lately.
Um, seeing why the gut has always been a place of activation, sometimes irritation, um, sometimes chaos, sometimes confusion. Actually, most of my life has been centered on my gut and, here I am again, actually going to it in order to calm the chaos. And it actually dawned on me when I was dealing with my son, who will get migraines, and one day he was getting a migraine. And there was something in me that felt like I needed to sort of press on his stomach, because one of the things that will occur is he'll get these migraines, and then he'll throw up, and he'll feel better almost instantly.
And so, sort of my mother's intuition was to sort of activate his stomach and, like- like, push it. And when I did that, it actually helped relieve his migraine. And looking into it further, the idea was that I was stimulating his vagus nerve and to think if that could work for him, then that could be something that could work for me and sort of bringing it to my attention for my own nervous system issues that I'm experiencing, where I feel a lot of anxiety and distraction and fear. And I wasnt sure why, and now I know it's because of the progesterone sensitivity or the progesterone intolerance that I've been experiencing.
And whatever the progesterone was doing to my nervous system was really creating something really scary almost all the time. And one of the ways that I could kind of break free from it was being able to bring my attention to my gut, my stomach, and to breathe in very consciously, and almost feel the activation of my vagus nerve to help switch my nervous system to bring it to a place of calming and relaxation.
And that became something that could allow me to bring my attention from the fear and the chaos and the spiraling thoughts to switch it to focus on my body, and shut off the incessant downward spiral conversation in my brain, and the fear that I kept feeling. I would just swim in it. Being able to conciously focus and be able to bring my attention to just feel in my body- that became the escape, and could also bring relief. And not only is bringing my attention to my body one way to stop the chaos, but breathing in to help activate the sympathetic nervous system flips the switch to allow calm to occur.
I would suggest people look into somatic therapy. I've used and utilized Irene Lyon as a great resource and education source for me. I also have a local somatic therapist that I can get in touch with who I've done some work with her before, and it's been great.
So for those of you who are going through the nervous system issues, because of the heightened energies that are going on, whether that be how you feel about the news that's just never ending, or that you're sensitive to the energies being emitted by the sun, or the energies of the collective, you are in that too, and you will react to that as well. Those are my suggestions that could help since I've been riding this wave like it’s my job lately.
I am feeling some relief now because I stopped progesterone about a week and a half ago. But, um, there's a time when I gotta revisit progesterone because I can't not take it at this time. So I'm passing this along to you, but also as a reminder to me, breathe. Breathe in deep. Breathe in so deep that you're knocking on the door of your vagus nerve, because that is the switch that can change how you feel in a sense of being in more control than maybe how you have been feeling lately.
