Flu activity is surging across Maine and the US, and we’re taking extra steps to keep everyone safe. Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, January 7 at 7 am, all EMMC clinical staff will wear masks during patient care, and we strongly encourage patients and visitors to mask up too—especially if feeling unwell.

Masking remains optional in waiting areas, lobbies, and our cafe, and visitors under 12 are not permitted. We’re also maintaining enhanced protocols in NICU, PICU, Pediatrics, and OB.

These moves help protect our most vulnerable, reduce spread, and keep care running smoothly. Thanks for doing your part!

ICYMI: Beginning in January of the new year, the Center for Family Medicine and Residency at Northern Light Health Center on Union Street in Bangor will no longer offer its Tuesday evening clinic hours from 5 to 8 pm. If you relied on those evening hours, our team can help you find alternative appointment times - just give us a call at 207.973.7979.

We appreciate your understanding.

Do you know the best tips to keep your baby safe while they sleep?

This is how our amazing labor and delivery team educate patients about safe sleep.

1. Place baby on their back to sleep every time.
2. Place baby on a firm, flat mattress.
4. Room share (not bed share) for at least the first 6 months.
5. Nothing in the crib, except for a tightly fitted sheet and pacifier if using one.
6. Use of pacifier for naps and at night.
7. Avoid smoking, va**ng, and impairment while caring for your baby.
8. Dress the baby for sleep to avoid over heating (no hats).
9. Attend all scheduled visits with the baby’s provider.
10. Exercise caution when purchasing baby products and devices. Ensure their safety for safe sleep.
11. Share these Safe Sleep tips with your community.

Also, during the winter months, be sure to keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature (not too hot, not too cool) to ensure a safe sleep environment.

Every December, we’re reminded of the incredible kindness that defines our community—and this year is no exception.

On Monday evening, the Maine State Police brought holiday magic to our pediatric unit, delivering toys for kids spending Christmas in the hospital. It’s an annual tradition we cherish, and we’re always moved by the troopers’ warmth and generosity as they help bring smiles to little faces during a tough time.

Then on Tuesday, a real-life Mrs. Claus—known undercover as "Jillian", a kindhearted local business owner—surprised us with a huge bag of plush stuffed animals collected through her community connections. Her delivery was welcomed by the Grant 8 Pediatrics team and EMMC President Ava Collins.

These are just two moments from one incredible week—but they reflect a much bigger truth: the compassion here knows no limits.

To every individual, business, and organization that has given your time, heart, and resources to support our patients and their families: thank you. You’re not just making the season brighter—you’re showing exactly what it means to care for one another.

We’re proud to call this place home. 💙🎄 Happy Holidays to all!

Have you heard about the Lydia Project? 🌟 At just 16, Lydia Brown is bringing joy to kids at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center for the fourth year with her incredible "Lydia Project." Having spent time in the hospital herself, she knows how much small comforts mean—and now she’s paying it forward with gifts, hope, and love. 💙 Thank you, Lydia! 🎁🎅🏼

WABI TV 5 shared her inspiring story earlier this week, and then today, Lydia and her mom, pictured here with members of our staff, dropped off their donations for the kiddos we're honored to care for on our inpatient pediatric unit. Watch the story here and thank you for making the holiday special, Lydia! 🎥✨

What an inspiring evening! We had the joy of meeting Christine, Elyse, Elizabeth, and Yogi from Penquis Rental—a team whose hearts are as big as their vision.

For the fifth year in a row, they’ve poured time, effort, and love into crafting beautiful wreaths from trees on their property in Sebec, raising an incredible $1,000 to support our patients at EMMC through Children’s Miracle Network!

These funds will bring smiles, toys, and comfort to kids during tough times—and every wreath tells a story of community, generosity, and care.

A huge thank you to Penquis Rental for your ongoing commitment and handmade spirit. You’re proof that small acts grow into big change.
