Thank you student Gabby for this great representation of placental development!
The placenta develops when a fertilized egg called a zygote divides and into many cells called a blastocyst. it then implants in the uterine wall, forming hair-like projections called villi that burrow in and remodel maternal blood vessels for the nutrient and oxygen exchange between mother and child. It grows into a truly unique complex separate organ that connects to the fetus through the umbilical cord to their mother. It becomes fully formed by the second trimester and supports the baby until birth.
Many families do different things with their placenta such as plant it under a tree or flowers or encapsulating it.
What special or interesting things have you done with your placenta?

One of our students, Gabby, made this beautiful representation of fetal circulation.

Did you know a baby in the womb has different circulation?

It’s a unique system where the placenta provides the fetus with oxygen and nutrients via the umbilical cord, because babies don’t need their lungs to breath yet the fetal lungs are bypassed using three shunts: the ductus venosus, which bypasses the liver; the foramen ovale, these move oxygenated blood from the right to the left atrium of the heart; and the ductus arteriosus, which connects the pulmonary artery to the aorta. The blood largely bypasses the fetal lungs so the shunts allow oxygen-rich blood to be delivered to the brain and heart, and they close shortly after birth as the baby begins to breathe air!

Our Story

Holly No. 7 began as a quiet but persistent idea several years ago. Many weeks would go by with no thought of it. In the middle of a conversation, while at a birth, at a prenatal, or at the end of a conversation, this idea would pop into my head and fall out of my mouth. This idea kept growing and resurfacing until one day in March 2015 I made a call to inquire about how one went about starting a birth center. I was informed about a workshop titled "How to Start a Birth Center." Much to my surprise, the timing of it worked perfectly with the babies due in my practice (such a rare occurrence!). Off I went a week later to learn some of the basics. And from then on, the once quiet and persistent idea took root and grew into the center we now have.

Holly No. 7's name comes from the history of this building we call our home. In 1888 this building was built as a fire station in the horse and carriage era. While renovating the building, we discovered that sections of the floor was covered by hay chaff from years ago. When it was time to name the birth center we thought long and hard about a name. We wanted a name that is meaningful, related to birth, conveyed safety, and a name we felt comfortable evolving into our identity as a brand. None of our ideas felt quite right. We had a closer look at the name carved into a piece of granite above the second floor windows. It was clear that the name given to this fire station long ago would continue to be its name today. We are excited to present to you: Holly No. 7 Birth Center - Family Health.

Having completed the pregnancy, labor, and birth of the building, we now look forward to watching this community resource grow. Our dream is to be here to help meet the needs of families from many walks of life. We look forward to meeting you, working with you, and hearing your story.
