As the days grow shorter and the sunlight fades, many individuals experience a dip in their mood and energy levels. For some, this can be more than just the "winter blues" – it can be a sign of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern.

At Harborlight Counseling, we understand the challenges of SAD and offer support and guidance to help you navigate this difficult time. Common symptoms of SAD include persistent low mood, fatigue, loss of interest in activities, sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, and feelings of hopelessness.

While the exact cause of SAD is unknown, it's believed to be related to the reduced exposure to sunlight during the winter months. This can disrupt the body's internal clock and affect the production of certain hormones, such as melatonin and serotonin.
Fortunately, there are effective treatments available for SAD. Light therapy, which involves exposure to a bright light box that mimics natural sunlight, is often the first-line treatment. Medication, such as antidepressants, may also be helpful in managing symptoms. Additionally, therapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), can help individuals develop coping strategies and manage SAD-related challenges.

If you're struggling with SAD, know that you're not alone. Our therapists at Harborlight Counseling can help you develop a personalized plan to manage your symptoms and find light in the darkness

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that require multifaceted treatment approaches. Two distinct avenues are often considered: distraction techniques and experiential therapies.

Here at Harborlight, we practice experiential. Experiential therapy is a form of insight-driven or action-based therapy that immerses a patient in an environment, setting, or experience. This approach offers innovative ways to address eating disorders and may be particularly helpful for individuals who haven’t responded to traditional treatments. When combined with other evidence-based treatments, this can be a beneficial tool for treating eating disorders.

Experiential therapies offer exciting possibilities for the future of eating disorder treatment. However, it’s essential to work with qualified healthcare professionals to ensure the safety and effectiveness of these approaches. It’s important to work with a treatment team that understands your unique needs and can help you develop a personalized plan. With the right support, recovery from an eating disorder is possible. Self-care is extremely important, especially when big events or life changes are on the horizon.

The Pillars of Self Care are:

Mental- Mental Self-Care involves creating a healthy mindset through mindfulness and curiosity.

Emotional- To practice emotional self-care, you want to create healthy coping strategies for any stresses that might occur in your daily life.

Physical- Physical self-care involves taking care of your body with rest, nutrition, and movement.

Environmental- Taking care of the places around you and the places you love, you’ll need to practice environmental self-care.

Spiritual- Activities or practice that give you a sense of meaning provide you with spiritual self-care.

Recreational- It’s important to make time for hobbies and activities that interest you. Doing so will result in practicing recreational self-care

Social- Building relationships and making connections with healthy boundaries is the best way to practice social self-care.

A well-balanced self-care routine involves each of these things.
