WIC (the Women, Infants & Children program) provides healthy foods to kids up to five years old and pregnant women in Michigan families with low to moderate income. It also gives breastfeeding support and education. InterCare has WIC locations in Ottawa, Allegan, Van Buren and Cass counties. February is School Based Health Care Awareness Month. Today we salute the E3 mental health program at Eau Claire Public Schools and school based therapist Keesha McKee, LPC! E3 stands for “Expanding, Enhancing Emotional Health.” Ms. McKee provides counseling, education and support for young people for issues such as family conflict, peer pressure, depression, anger management and others. As we celebrate Black History Month, today we honor three accomplished doctors. Dr. Patricia Bath improved the treatment of cataracts by inventing the Laserphaco Probe. She became the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent. Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston did pioneering research in sickle cell disease and became the first Black woman to direct a public health servcie bureau. Dr. Mae Jemison served as a medical officer in the Peace Corps and become the first Black woman in space.
