PROCEDURE SPOTLIGHT: Fluoroscopy-Guided Cervical Epidural Steroid Injection.

WHO IT'S FOR: People with pain in their neck, shoulders, and arms caused by a pinched or inflamed nerve in the cervical spine.

WHAT IT DOES: Relieves the pain associated with the pinched or inflamed nerve by decreasing swelling and reducing inflammation.

HOW IT'S PERFORMED: While the patient lies face down, a local anesthetic is administered to the neck. With the guidance of fluoroscopy (a moving x-ray), the doctor inserts a needle into the epidural space of the spine. Contrast dye is used to ensure proper needle placement, then the steroid is injected. Most patients report this injection is "no big deal".
