Imagine a pendulum slowly moving back and forth.

Notice what just happened. You engaged your imagination. You shifted your attention.

Now - Shift your attention from your Breath, to your Experience, and back again.

Or, allow yourself to simply BE present for a moment.

Pendulation* involves using your intention to shift your attention.

Peter Levine’s concept of Pendulation conveys the gentle rhythm of EFT, as we shift the focus of our attention from the past to the present, and from the present to the future.

* Peter Levine defines Pendulation as “the continuous, primary, organizing rhythm of contraction and expansion.” We experience this rhythm from moment to moment as we inhale and exhale, as our hearts expand and contract, and in the ongoing ebb and flow of emotion that accompanies every moment of our lives.

Pendulation promotes Integration - stay tuned to learn more about how Pendulation promotes integration!

EFT’S combine elements of mindful awareness with gentle, self-administered tapping on acupressure points. This gentle, rhythmic tapping facilitates a relaxation response that allows us to acknowledge emotions that keep us stuck in patterns of the past.

Like other mind-body tools, EFT’s enable us to re-pattern habitual reactions to situations that have triggered a stress response in the past, and respond in ways that are more consistent with the person we want to be. As we become more receptive to new possibilities, we’re ready to leave old patterns behind and renew our relationships with ourselves and those we love. Gary Craig, the founder of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), says, “For results to be terrific, you’ve got to be specific.”

I like to say “BE SPECIFIC - it’s the key to EFT!”

The phrase “BE SPECIFIC” is both an idea and an acronym. The letter “S” reminds us to tap on “Specific Events.” When tapping on Specific Events, the letter “I” reminds us to “Investigate” by asking questions such as “Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?”

When using these questions to create your Set Up Statement, you might say, “Even though I feel startled in my chest, just remembering the time I was slicing apples in the kitchen with my grandmother, I dropped the paring knife on the floor, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

If your grandmother responded by exclaiming, “Be careful, child!,” the letter “I” serves as a reminder to “Identify aspects” which are the sensory details associated with the experience. Using the example above, you might remember the color of the apples, the smell of cinnamon, the taste of the apple slices and the sound of your grandmother’s voice.

If her tone was harsh, you might say, “Even though I feel this sadness in my chest, just remembering my grandmother’s voice, she said, ‘Be careful, child!” when I dropped the paring knife on the floor, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Once your SUDS level for a Specific Event is at a two or below, the letter “I” also serves as a reminder to “Imagine the scene” in order to Identify any remaining aspects of the event. if your SUDS is at zero, you can also test your work by vividly imagining the scene to see if there is any remaining emotional distress associated with the memory.

Whether you’re tapping on past events, or imagining future events, “BE SPECIFIC - it’s the key to EFT!”

It’s a snowy afternoon in April, so I thought I’d share a short post about how EFT’s work. I hope you enjoy it!

According to Dr. Daniel Siegel, MD, neuroscience research suggests three activities of the mind that help us create well-being and happiness in our lives – focused attention, open awareness, and compassion, or what we might call “kind intention.” (Seigel, 2021)

It’s a winter wonderland today in the Chicago area! Hope you enjoy this recent blog from my website.
