The Real MVPs of Shoulder Strength: Meet the Rotator Cuff
Why Your Shoulder Hurts (and How Massage Can Fix It)
What the Heck Is a Rotator Cuff? And Why Should You Care?
Let’s talk about those deep, sneaky little muscles that make your shoulder move like a dream—or scream like a nightmare when they’re pi**ed off. We’re talking about the rotator cuff.
Despite sounding like a car part, it’s actually a team of four small but mighty muscles that keep your shoulder joint stable and strong. Think of them as the behind-the-scenes crew that makes your shoulder the star of the show.
Meet the S.I.T.S. Team:
S - Supraspinatus
This one helps you lift your arm out to the side (like waving at your nosy neighbor). It’s also the most commonly injured of the crew. Why? Overuse, poor posture, or too many dramatic hair flips.
I - Infraspinatus
Located below the supraspinatus, it helps externally rotate your shoulder—think opening a doorknob or throwing a ball.
T - Teres Minor
Another external rotator, working with the infraspinatus to fine-tune shoulder movement and stability. It’s small but critical, like the tech guy at a concert.
S - Subscapularis
This one lives on the front side of your scapula and handles internal rotation—like scratching your back or reaching into your back pocket. It’s also the strongest of the bunch.
Why They Matter:
These muscles stabilize your shoulder joint, keeping your humerus bone snug in its socket. Without them, your shoulder would flop around like a loose hinge.
They’re key for lifting, reaching, throwing, carrying, and even self-care moves like brushing your hair or getting dressed.
Common Rotator Cuff Woes:
Tendonitis (aka “I overdid it at the gym”)
Tears (partial or full-thickness—ouch!)
Impingement (when things get pinched between bones)
How Massage Helps:
Massage therapy can reduce tension, improve circulation, and support healing if these muscles are inflamed or injured. Trigger point work, myofascial release, and gentle stretching are your besties here.

Takeaway?
Take care of your rotator cuff before it makes you take a break. Regular movement, smart training, and massage are the trifecta for happy shoulders.
