The Necco Difference — Through Nathan’s Eyes...

Nathan shares why NECCO made all the difference in his decision to foster. As a single parent, reliability mattered — and he found it. From the very first conversation, Necco made the process feel approachable, supportive, and never lonely.

Nathan talks about the comfort of knowing someone will always pick up the phone, day or night, and how that level of support gave him the confidence to take the leap. His message is simple: if fostering is on your heart, give it a try — you won’t be doing it alone.

This week, we visited Lily's Place in Huntington. They gave us a tour of their facilities and we learned so much from their staff about the many services they offer for children and families in our community.

Lily’s Place is dedicated to creating healthier families and helping end the cycle of addiction in our community. What began as the nation’s first Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) Center has grown into a comprehensive system of care serving infants, children and families in our community.

Through their NAS Center, Residential Treatment Program for pregnant and parenting women, Family Center, and Children’s Center, the staff at Lily's Place provide evidence-based care, prevention services, counseling, case management, and recovery support that are all designed to strengthen families in the area in any way they can!

Their Children’s Center offers counseling, mentorship, prevention programming, and outreach activities that support children’s emotional well-being and healthy development.

Here is some information on the services Lily's Place offers, by age range:

Children (Birth – 5 years)
Through our Children’s Center, we provide high-quality early childhood education and developmentally appropriate care in a safe, structured environment. Our focus is on social-emotional development, early learning skills, routine, and stability which are all critical foundations during these early years.

School-Age Children (6 – 12 years)
We provide academic support, structured programming, mentorship and enrichment activities that promote confidence, resilience, and healthy peer relationships. Our team works closely with families to ensure children have the tools and support they need to succeed both in school and at home.

Adolescents (13 – 18 years)
We offer age-appropriate support services that focus on life skills, emotional regulation, mentorship and continued academic encouragement. Our goal is to empower teens with the confidence and coping skills necessary to thrive.

Family Support Services
In addition to children’s programming, we provide wraparound services for caregivers, including parenting support, case management, resource referrals and connections to community partners. We take a whole-family approach because we know that when caregivers are supported, children thrive.

The Truth No One Told Nathan About Foster Kids...

Nathan breaks down one of the biggest misconceptions about fostering: the belief that foster kids are “damaged” or “difficult.” He admits he once bought into those stereotypes too — until he actually welcomed a child into his home. What he discovered surprised him: they’re just kids. Real, normal, quirky, funny, human kids.

Nathan’s message is simple but powerful — when you give them a chance, they’ll surprise you in the best possible ways.

From a Quiet House to a Full Heart: Nathan’s Foster Story...

Nathan, a single foster dad and self-employed handyman, shares how saying “yes” to fostering changed his entire world. What started as a long-held dream of adoption led him to NECCO, where the support he found made the journey feel possible — even solo.

Now in the process of adopting the very first child placed with him, Nathan talks about how his home is no longer quiet or empty, but filled with life, messes, surprises, and joy. He opens up about overcoming stereotypes and discovering that foster kids are simply kids — deserving of a chance and capable of surprising you in all the best ways. His message: if your heart’s in the right place, the obstacles aren’t as big as they seem.

❣️Happy Valentine's Day! ❣️

How to celebrate Valentine's Day with children in foster care: focus on creating safety, stability, and connection, ensuring children feel loved, valued, and secure through consistent care rather than grand gestures. Meaningful activities include baking heart-shaped treats, having family movie nights, and engaging in crafts like making valentines for friends or community members.

For some children experiencing foster care, this day may be uncomfortable, upsetting, or bring up feelings of loss. The most meaningful gift is demonstrating consistent, patient, and loving care.

Teens in foster care need loving, stable homes just as much as younger children, and the impact of support during these formative years can last a lifetime!

Only about 3% of teens who age out of foster care without a strong support system go on to pursue post-secondary education. We can change that, starting right here in Beckley. One home, one teen, one future at a time.
