🏋️♂️ Dealing with Uneven Shoulders? Here’s What’s Actually Happening!
Ever look in the mirror and notice that one of your shoulders sits higher than the other? You aren’t alone! Uneven shoulders are incredibly common, but they can lead to chronic neck pain, upper back tightness, and poor posture if left unchecked.
It all comes down to a muscle imbalance—some muscles are doing way too much work, while others have completely clocked out.
Here is the breakdown based on the infographic below:
🔴 The Overachievers (Muscles That Get Tight)
These muscles are locked up and actively pulling your shoulder upward or forward:
Upper Trapezius & Levator Scapulae: Tighten and pull the shoulder blade up toward your ears.
SCM (Neck Muscle): Tightens and tilts your head to one side.
Pectoralis Major: Pulls your shoulders forward into a rounded posture.
🔵 The Slachers (Muscles That Get Weak)
These muscles are underactive, losing the tug-of-war and allowing the other shoulder to droop:
Lower Trapezius & Rhomboids: Weakness here reduces shoulder blade stability and ruins spinal alignment.
Serratus Anterior: Leads to poor, winging scapular movement.
Deep Core Muscles: A weak core means your upper body loses its foundational support.
💡 How Do You Fix It?
The goal isn't just to "stand up straighter"—you have to balance the system!
Stretch the tight, overactive muscles (red zone).
Strengthen the weak, underactive muscles (blue zone).
Mind your daily posture (stop leaning on one armrest or carrying your heavy bag on the same shoulder every day!).
🎒 Tip: If you constantly carry a purse, backpack, or briefcase on one side, try switching sides today to give your dominant shoulder a break!
